Possibly related to William Duffield, gardener of Highgate, whose will was proved in 1763  and left everything to his widow, Martha Duffield. This Martha, widow of Highgate, was the victim of a theft in 1765 .
They may also be related to John Duffield, who had a lease of Gainsborough Gardens in Highgate 1700-1721. 
Alternatively, there is reference to a Duffield Sewer and Duffield Sluice, which flowed through Bermondsey and dates back to at least 1572. It is possible that the family had been in this area since that time. . Mary Duffield was listed as the landlady of the Kings Head inn in Southwark in 1677.
