Possibly related to William Duffield, gardener of Highgate, whose will was proved in 1763 [1] and left everything to his widow, Martha Duffield. This Martha, widow of Highgate, was the victim of a theft in 1765 [2].

They may also be related to John Duffield, who had a lease of Gainsborough Gardens in Highgate 1700-1721. [3]

Alternatively, there is reference to a Duffield Sewer and Duffield Sluice, which flowed through Bermondsey and dates back to at least 1572. It is possible that the family had been in this area since that time. [4]. Mary Duffield was listed as the landlady of the Kings Head inn in Southwark in 1677. [5]
