Petitioners for Traders Licenses
Trading with the Indians required a license. In their petitions to the Court, some assigned as reasons for desiring to become Traders, their advanced years of age, their loss of the use of a hand or arm, and other physical infirmities preventing them from hard manual labor. Others set forth that they had just arrived from abroad with large stocks of merchandise.
The following persons petitioned the Chester County Court for licenses to trade, between 1724 and 1755; to all of whom such licenses were granted by the Governor:
