Image:Early Germantown Settlers.jpg Germantown, PA was initially settled by German Immigrants from Krefeld Germany. arriving in 1683. In the next few years additional settlers arrived from Krefeld, and from the nearby Moers and Mulheim, and perhaps others. Other settlers arrived from Kreigsheim,Neuweid, and Cologne. Most, if not all, travelled down the Rhine by boat to Rotterdam, a trip which may have taken six weeks, depending on where on the Rhine they embarked. From Rotterdam most took ship to the English Channel to one of the English ports (London, Cowes, etc.), from whence they started the final leg of their Journey to Philadelphia. The transatlantic voyage typically took another six to 12 weeks.
