From Russell County, Virginia Court Order Book 3
P379 - Samuel Hays recommended for Capt in the 1st batallion, 72nd regiment in place of James Sargent, resigned. Thomas Chambers recommended for Lt in same in place of Samuel Hays, promoted. William Wright recommended as Ensign in same in place of Charles Hays who refuses to act.
P385 - Motion of Barbara Gillespie & William Hays. Security: William Gilmore, adm granted on the estate of William Gillespie, decd
P385 - John Jesse, Jr., John Colley, Samuel Hays & Jacob Raresnake to appraise the estate of William Gillespie, decd
This is my William Hays and his daughter, Barbara, who married William Gillespie/Gillaspie. The fact that Samuel Hays (from the Clinch River) is appointed to appraise the Gillespie estate is highly significant for HAYS researchers as it strongly suggests a relationship between the Rich Valley HAYSes and the Clinch River HAYS clan (in my opinion). There are several of these Clinch HAYSes who made their way to Nashville, Tennessee and supports the relationship of William Hays' neighbor (and likely brother), Capt. John Hays, Jr. and wife Rebecca, who ended up with the
P586 - James Gillespie recommended as Capt in 1st batallion, 72nd Regiment in place of Samuel Hays, removed. Thomas Hendricks for Lt in place of Thomas Chambers, removed. Jacob Raresnake, Jr. for Ensign in place of Charles Hays, removed
It would be very interesting to find the dates for these court order book entries to see if the timing supports the connection of these men as the neighbors of Col. Robert Hays and Capt. John Hays, Jr.. This is the possible connection to the Hermitage lines as there is the Samuel Hays that owned land adjacent to the Hermitage property, part of which was acquired by Andrew Jackson as is included in the present-day Hermitage site.

In other Russell County records, we find there is James and Rebeckah Hays, whose Virginia neighbors were Captain John Bowen, Andrew Lamie/Lammie and Thomas Gillespie on the Maiden Spring Fork of the Clinch River. James and Rebeckah sell their land to Henry Bowen (son of Capt. Bowen) on February 1st 1797 while already residing in Davidson County, Tennessee (around Nashville).

We already know that David Hays, son of Andrew Hays, Sr. of Hays Creek, and his wife Esther “Hally or Hattie” Montgomery moved to Nashville from Abingdon, Washington Co., Virginia. David died in Nashville in late 1805 and then [Hattie] moved back near her father Robert Montgomery in Washington Co. Virginia. BTW, I think we will find this Robert Montgomery had land or bought land adjacent to Andrew Hays in or near Rockbridge County,
