THE 8TH APPEARANCE OF BENJAMIN TOTTEN. SMYTH CO TN.

1800 Smyth Co TN Court Minuets.

Deed, Redmond D. Barry to Sampson Williams, for 228 acres, proven by the oath of Micheal Murphy, one of the subscribing witnesses thereto, and ordered to be registered.” Here we have an item about which we have a little information. Micheal Murphy lived in 1800 at the present Pleasant Shade. So far as we have been able to learn, he was the first settler there. His house is said to have stood in what is now a field just back of the home built some years ago by the late Bob Williams. This was on elevated ground, perhaps 20 feet above the creek, now known as the combined Sanderson’s and Boston Branches. This stream flows into the main Peyton’s Creek, about three hundred yards below where the old Murphy home is said to have been located. Years ago when we lived at Pleasant Shade, we were told that Court once met in the home of a man who lived then just back of the present Williams home. We have since learned from the old records that his name was Micheal Murphy, and that the September 1800 Court met in his home. Redmond Barry is another “unknown” to us. The land in the two deeds above being the same in acreage, and Sampson Williams having been a purchaser in one of the transactions and a seller in another, we judge the land to have been in the same tract. But it’s location is a mystery to us.

“Benjamin Totten took the oath of Deputy Sheriff in Open Court.

Note George Teater Sr married Esther Griffith 1796 Madison Ky. Note George Teater Sr Married Ester Totten as well Documeted and proved by the 1813 Totten family power of attorney. Benjamin Totten sr is documented until 1802 Jackson TN where he was living with Jonas Griffith the fatherInlaw of Sarah Teater. And most likly the FATHER of Esther Griffith George Teaters 2nd wife. Since Benjamin Totten Sr died after 1802 his wife couldnt be Esther the 2nd wife of George Teater . Ester the 3rd wife George Teater and 1st and only wife of Benjamon Totten was not a Widow until after 1802. proof George Teater Sr had 3 wives 2 of them both named Ester and Esther. Its a coincedence that both wives were named Ester.--Parris 05:49, 10 October 2008 (EDT)

JOHN TUTON. John Tuton has more notes as a Squater and Renegade Irishman. He appears in the Timeline Norhten neck Loudoun as Richard Pearis and the Gonzalva family of Greenbier. John Tuton shows after this date to be in the NC Militia list with Abslom Tuton 1750s as John ? uton. The name Gonzalva especaiily John Gonzalva repeats itself in the Totten family of Benjamin Totten. Including names Spanish such as Fatima Esmeralda Zulima Beuena these names are resticted to James Totten Joseph Totten and Parris Teater a borher Inlaw of both mentioned here.. Chacleys Chronicles shows the Gonzalva family of Greenebrier were killed and taken Captive 1750s. Charles Gonzalva appears also in the book Lord Dunmores war along with Gaeorge Parris Robert Parris John Totten Sgt George Teater. This may be the reason Benjamin Totten was a orphan teenager apprenticed to Andrew Miller 1768. Another person close to John Totten and Benjamin Totten was Capt Thomas Ingles taken as captive and raised as Shawnee the time the Gonzalvas were killed and and also taken captive.. THE HISTORY OF THE NOTHERN NECK. In a region along the Potomac River that would one day be settled by colonists, Franz Louis Michel traversed and mapped the area in 1707, depicting on his map an Indian long house in Maryland adjacent to Conoy Island. Here on Conoy, the Piscataway Indians had established a fort in 1699 to enjoy the benefits of a supply of fresh fish. Christopher de Graffenried met them in 1712 on his exploration of the Shenandoah Valley and climbed Sugarloaf Mountain to draw his own map of the area. The Piscataways remained on Conoy until the signing of the Treaty of Albany in 1722. [1] Proprietor’s land grants in the area used Indian landmarks in survey descriptions. The meets and bounds of Francis Awbrey’s 1728 patent along the Potomac at Point of Rocks used a landmark described as “a great heap of stones called an Indian grave.”[2] Catesby Cocke’s 1731 patent used a point “near the Indian fort.”[3] The grave was located near the Potomac north of what would become Chestnut Hill. The fort was located in the Catoctin Mountains to the southwest of the Chestnut Hill land. Area Colonial Settlements Thomas Albin, Samuel Thacker, and William King obtained the earliest Proprietor’s land grant in the area east of the Catoctin Mountains and north of Goose Creek in January 1724 along the Potomac River.[4] The fertile land along the river was the first to be granted, primarily to tidewater area land speculators who established quarters there. The earliest known area resident was a man named John Tuton who was already living as a squatter on land in 1728 when Awbrey obtained his patent, a point of which terminates “near the place where John Tuton lives on.” By 1742, Tuton no longer lived there.[5]--Parris 06:33, 10 October 2008 (EDT)

THE HISTORY OF LOUDOUN VA. It appears that 5 brothers Toten Tutun Doten Tooten ect came from the Barbados with Thomas Parris same timeline to NC. John Totten Tuton ect went to the Irish Colony in Frederickburg then to Loudoun then joined Abslom Tuton in NC. Most likey returned and was killed by indians along with the Gonzalzas 1750s This last survey overlapped an Irish settlement opposite the mouth of MONOCACY , which had been in existence at from the beginning of 1725. It was apparently a Bridgehead pushed across the Potomac by immigrants who were crowding into Maryland from the north to establish the community afterwards known as Fredericktown. In January 1724/5, William Hawlin (spelled in the records also and Hallin & Halling)) took a grant of 535 acres, described simply as above Goose Creek on Potowmack river side but identified by subsequent references at first as 'below the Yaller Rocks and both sides Red Rock Run. Above this, in I729, Margaret Hawlin had a grant of 416 acres 15 or 16 miles above Goose Creek and about two miles below the Kitchen Mountain further located by references in later grants to 'Clerks Run' The widow Hawlins thenceforth for some years remained a landmark and in her vicinity lands were occupied, not under the formality of a grant, by Irishmen who had of Maryland. One of these was that [John Tuton ]who lived in Awbreys Point of Rocks grant, and from later grants seems to have been bought out by Awbrey. In like manner Amos Sinclair bought out the widow Hawlin, and took, in his own name, several original grants in the same vicinity. Catesby Cocke and Benjamin Grayson, earliest speculators in LOUDOUN lands, followed with grants on the head waters of Limestone.--Parris 06:48, 10 October 2008 (EDT)

Shelby County, Kentucky. December 1, 1833, age 83. States that he was a resident of Montgomery County, Virginia when he entered the service as a private volunteer soldier in September 1774, as well as he remembers, and was attached to the company of Captain Campbell; that he rendezvoused with his company at the house of Captain Campbell in Montgomery County, Virginia, that the tour was for 3 months under command of Col Lewis who designed an expedition against the Indian settlements on the Kohawa River. They having committed some depredations upon the frontier settlements and having engaged in open hostilities; that he marched with the rest of said men from their place of rendezvous upon said expedition and upon their march on the waters of New River. He, this declarant, received a severe injury in his right leg by a fall and could in consequence threof proceed with the troops no further but was compelled to remain behind and await the return of the party that they had afterwards as he was informed a skirmish with the Indians on the Kohawa River when said Lewis the commander was killed: that the detachment at last returned and with its assistance he was enabled to return: that he continued afterwards with his company until the expiration of his tour but was unable to perform any active military duty during it's continuance after he received the aforesaid injury - - -says that in March 1775 again entered the service as a volunteer for 3 months in a company of Captain Thompson, that he still resided in the said County of Montgomery: that he rendezvoused with the company to New River and was stationed at a small fort or station near a place called Long Island, for the purpose of guarding and defending the frontiers from the Indians who were exceedingly troublesome: that while he was at said point he was engaged upon various scouting parties directed against the Indians and was indeed actively employed in that kind of warfare against them during the main and principal part of his term of service and when his tour had expired having fully and faithfully served out the same, he was discharged and returned to his home. Says that on July 24, 1775, he entered upon an expedition to Kentucky under Daniel Boone: that there were only ten effective men in company and they left the said County of Montgomery on the said day and marched through the country and finally landed at Boonesboro on the Kentucky River at which place there was at that time a small fort, that he continued at said place guarding it except when absent on scouting and spying parties, which was frequently the case for about the period of four months and then returned to his home in Montgomery County, Virginia. Says that his services upon this trip or expedition were those of a volunteer. States that early in the spring of the year 1776, he thinks in March or April of that year the Indians again became very troublesome upon the frontier comprising the section of country where he lived - - his residence still being in Montgomery County, Virginia, and that he volunteered against them and accordingly returned to the service and was engaged almost constantly during the residue of the spring of said year and the following Summer and Fall in scouting parties against them, which were largely headed by Captain Campbell and also a spy, says he served 5 months that his services were almost constant, the situation of the frontier and disposition of the Indians required unremitting attention. Further states that in 1777 in the spring, the situation on the settlements in his quarters of the country was no better than it was in the year proceeding: that the Indians were still hostile and frequently committed depredation upon them, sometimes stealing their horses and every once in awhile butchering some of the inhabitants, that in consequence thereof, the service of the able bodied men were in almost constant requisition from the later part of the winter to the first part of the spring until the later part of the fall of that year comprising a period of nearly or quite nine months and that he, this declarant, being young man intermission during the whole of said period in spying and scouting parties against them. - - He is sure that he is within the bounds of truth when he says that he was engaged in less than six months in active and actual service against them as a spy and upon scouting parties during the spring - summer and fall of the said year 1777, says Captain Campbell was an active Indian fighter and commanded the scouting parties upon several occasions in which this declarant was engaged. Says further that a brother of his (this declarant) was also a captain and that his said brother was also very active exertions to protect the settlements and that he was often the leader of parties in which the declarant was one, he states that during the winter season the Indians commonly gave them little or no interruption, that it was only in the open season of the year generally that they were to be dreaded and guarded against. Says that in 1778 he was engaged as in the proceeding year in endeavoring to protect the country from depredations of the Indians. That he was also much engaged that year to wit: 1778 in active service against the Indians as a spy and scout, that his services were performed in the spring, summer and fall of the year: that he is confident that he could not have performed less than four months active service as such during said year: that his said services as a spy and scout or ranger against the Indians during the said year 1778 were performed under Captain Campbell and Captain Paris. That in the month of May 1779 as well as he now remembers he again entered the service of the U.S. as a private volunteer soldier under Captain Campbell upon a tour of 3 months: that the company met at the house of Campbell and he was marched by him to the vicinity of New River where the Indians had been committing some depredations: that he continued in the service against the Indians endeavoring to repel and punish their depredations, during the whole of his said tour and when the same was fully ended, he returned home to Montgomery County, Virginia where he still resided. States that early in the spring of the year 1780 he moved from Montgomery County, VA. to Green County, N.C. which now composes part of the State of Tennessee: That his said company rendezvoused at the muster guard and came under command of Col William Campbell, who had also under his command various other militia companies: that they were marched from their said places of rendezvous up the country and in a few days were joined by other men under command of Col Sevier and Col Shelby and Col Cleveland: that they then marched in pursuit of the British and Tories under the command of Col or General Ferguson and finally came up with him at King's Mountain where a severe engagement took place in which Ferguson men and many of the men were killed and a good many prisoners taken: that he continued in service after this action until the expiration of his said tour of duty and was then discharged and returned to his home in said Green County, N.C. - - -Says that in 1781, in June he again entered service as a private volunteer soldier in a troop of Cavalry, under Captain Richardson upon a tour of 3 months, that his company rendezvoused at a place called Knox on Hoston and there came under command of Col Martin and were marched against the Indians at what was then called the lower Chickamunga towns, that they destroyed their huts and corn and upon the route 3 of the Americans killed and five wounded, that after destroying their corn they were marched back again and the Indians fled on at a distance and a few days after the return of the party Indians commenced a series of depredations upon the settlements and by means there of kept this declarant constantly engaged in active service during the whole period of his said tour and when the same was fully and completely ended he was discharged and returned home. - - -States that during the year 1782 and 1783, he was frequently engaged in parties against the Indians under the command of Captain Richardson and Sawyer, that he also acted a part of each one of those years as an Indian spy, he thinks not less than two months in each year, and he thinks he did not serve on the parties named above less than two months, as a spy and two months upon scouting parties, in 1782 and in similar service in 1783, amounting in all, for both said years to 8 months. - - -States that it has been his fortune from his first arrival at manhood until 1793 to be a resident in the frontier settlements and amongst those who were exposed to the incursions of the Indians: that his own safety and that of his family and his neighbors required of him the most active exertion during a great part of the time. - - -Said he was born in Botetourt County, Virginia October 3, 1750, he remained in Green County, N.C. until 1793 when called into the service from the early part of the year 1780 until the conclusion of the war in 1793, I moved from that county and state to Madison County, Kentucky, now Gerrard County, Kentucky and about ten years afterwards moved to where I now live, in Shelby County, KY. - - I recollect that Col Shelby was with us upon the tour against the British and Tories and upon that tour the battle of King's Mountain was fought. - - Robert received his pension, $80.00, 4 January 1834 at age 84).

Note Robert said he was in the Militia 1774 He was lsited under Sgt George Teater as a Private. he said he was the brother of capt George Pearis. These are the white sons of George Pearis and a Sarah Pepper, Sarah Pearis and Rhoda Pearis being the Indian daughters of George Pearis.--Parris 07:28, 10 October 2008 (EDT)

From Daniel Boones own hand from the battle of Boonesborough KY. Daniel Boones journal On the first day of January, 1778, I went with a party of thirty men to the Blue Licks, on Licking River, to make salt for the different garrisons in the country.

About the first of August, [ 1778 ] I made an incursion into the Indian country, with a party of nineteen men, including my friend Captain Teter,,in order to surprise a small town up Sciotha, called Paint-Creek-Town.

Capt Samuel Teater aka Samuel Gibson. was listed already the year before as commanding a company 1777 in Ohio Co Va. The same year he was noted as defeating Simom Girtys war parties in the journal of Joseph Doddridge at Fort Doddridge by sheer reputation. Note the only way Daniel Boone and Cpt Teater could be friends is that they were both from Rowan Co NC. Went as Waggoners to Braddocks Deafeat both as young teenagers. Both George Teater and Samuel Teater show to be in the same regiment as Richard Pearis during the French and Indian War.--Parris 13:31, 10 October 2008 (EDT)

Properties of Jacob Teeder George Teeder. located near the McCulloh line in Rowan Co.

From Linn, Jo White: Rowan County, North Carolina Tax Lists 1757-1800, Annotated Transcriptions.

p. 16, 1759 Rowan County Militia Lists (cont.) On April 16, 1760 Captain Conrod Michael submitted his claim for expenses for men sent out scouting on four occasions in 1759. Two of these scouting parties included Jacob Teeder or (June 2 and July 3, 1759). They were out for 6 days each time, and were paid 2/8 per day, or 16 shillings per trip.

p. 34, 1759 Rowan County Tax List (cont.) Jacob Teater appears on the 1759 Tax List with a 1 after his name, which I take to mean his household only included one titheable--no other adult males or slaves.

p. 46, 1760 Rowan County Militia Lists (cont.) George Teeder was part of a scouting party from Capt Michael's company dated Feb. 14, 1760. Out 6 days, paid 16 shillings.

p. 64, 1766 List of Captains Rowan Regiment _________________Teeter listed as a Captain.

1766 Capt Teeter was here with Daniel Boone William Van Cleave .. Note the Teders Teeder brothers George and Jacob were listed in Edgecombe NC. With a Samuel Tedder 1752 both Jacob Teeder and Samuel are listed as the Clerks of Edgcombe Court.. George Pearis the father in law of George Teater is noted as moving here 1764 so his son Robert Pearis and George Pearis would of been about 14 yrs old and 18 yrs old. Note Daniel Boone said Capt Teater was his friend and Capt Teeter did live here in 1766. This appears that one year after Samuel Teater was born that George Teater Sr and Samuel Gibson Teater Capt Teater removed back here to Rowan Co With George Pearis then joining their uncles George Teeder and Jacob Teeder also spelled here as Teater. George Teater is listed farther south in 1765 in St johns Georgia.. Note the Mccullohs very documented with these Teeders 1750s in Edgecombe NC.--Parris 14:21, 10 October 2008 (EDT)

NOTE SAMUEL BOONE PHEBE HARRIS ROBERT TEATER 1810 HENRY CO KENTUCKY. Phebe Harris is noted as the daughter in law of William Van Cleave in his will. Therefore she was the sister inlaw of George Teater Jr.

Timthy logan jr as posted here already notes he fought with Charles Teater Samuel Teater and spent a long time on the frontier with Samuel Boone here. Timothy logan was the son in law of Squire Boone.. CHARLES TEATER. He was not mentioned in the will of George Teater sr 1815 but noted fought alongside Samuel Teater son of George Teater Sr. means Charles died prior to 1815/ Charles Teater maybe the father of Samuel L Teater and James L Teater who listed many times in Obion TN with Benjamin Totten Jr the step son of George Teater and the brother in law of Parris Teater.--Parris 12:34, 11 October 2008 (EDT)

THE TEATERS CONTINUED ON WITH THE TOTTENS IN OBION TENN. James L Teater and Samuel L Teater migrted with Benjamin Totten Jr to Obion Tenn, Census notes show Samuel L Teater was born in Kentucky. both Samuel L Teater and James L Teater are not found as yet as known sons of those who were listed in George Teaters 1815 will. estimated they were sons of Charles Teater who died before George Teaters Will. Benjamin Totten Jr here is liSted with Adam Huntsman the man who defeated Davy Crockett politics. The First Obion County Taxpayers

The following pages list the names of the taxpayers. They are in the original order and spelling used at the time, beginning the first year of county organization up to the first federal census here in 1830. They may provide some clues for further research or validate other sources. They were taken from microfilm of the original tax books, the images were very poor, difficult to read, so may contain transcription errors.

The complete tax rolls list the poll or property taxes paid, the range and section location of the tracts, the number of acres, sometime the grant or entry number, and other notes. It is possible those over 50, not paying a poll tax or owning any land, do not appear on these lists.

Some taxpayers may have never lived in Obion County. Land was granted here by North Carolina in the late 1700s, known then as the Territory South of the Ohio, Surveyors District 13, to their Revolutionary War soldiers. Many of the tracts were later sold by them, land speculators, or descendants back east. A further study of the deeds and grants may indicate which taxpayers actually lived in Obion County in the 1820s.

These individuals may be listed on 1820 and 1830 census in other states or counties and were just passing through Obion County to cross the Mississippi River a few miles north at Hickman, Kentucky. Many of these taxpayers do not appear on the 1830 census here.

In regards to the Will question. Read the whole Will on the section . The pesron named George Teater signed is not a Witness. He is giving a son George Teater lands and slaves along with the other children. The witness are below the colum of the person signing the Will. The signature of Benjamin Totten Orange Co. I have no access to the micro film. The Surname Totten before the Revoluton in the Southern colonies shows on many Tax Lists Census Wills Land grants as Dooton Tooten Tuton Tuten Tutin Tutten Doten Dotton Dowten Dowton. ect. A good example is the notes below on Peter Tutten who lived alongside John Porterfield and Andrew miller 1779 old 96th sc. After the revolution as shown below he always recorded as Peter Totten. There was no uniformed style of spelling Totten Totton before the revolution in the Southern Colonies. It became uniformed as Totten Totton after the Revolution.. The northern Tottens of New York lived in cities and where Merchants. 90% where Notorius Loyalists Tories. They were educated and lived in cilvilized established Cities such as New York. The southern Tottens lived on the frontier were less educated in fact some usually are x signers. The Recorders of these records were simular they lived on the frontier and were less apt to care less as to how they spelled someones name , Considering the amount of money these recorders received and dangerous travels. a note. The Tottens were a numerous family of Casewell NC 1800 downward they appear as the Grandchildren of Benjamin Totten sr. it may be when he signed the petition to form Caswell Co out of Orange co he left some lands for the elder son John Totten who died 1806 in Garrard Co KY.--Parris 09:59, 19 October 2008 (EDT)
