From: Harrells Moving Westward
James Harroll, Harreld brought his family to southwest Virginia about 1769 and settled on the headwaters of a creek which bore his name, Harrolls Creek. His land was located on Little Walkers Mountain and Harroll's Creek flowed northward into North Fork of Holston River. The land is about three miles north of Abingdon, Virginia. He claimed two hundred acres when he first settled and added over two hundred acres later.
Where James Harroll, Harreld came from has not been proven, however he is thought to have migrated from northern Virginia, possibly Fauquier or Prince William County. He had two sons, James and Robert, and a daughter, Mary.
James II was married and had children but was apparently in bad health in 1796 or for some other reason his father willed a part of the homestead to him only until his oldest son became of age. James I died in Washington county, Virginia in 1796 and a few years later James II died. About the same time, his son, James III married a Bradshaw girl and in 1816 he sold his portion of the James Harroll farm and apparently moved away, possibly to Kentucky where his Uncle Robert Harroll, Harreld had gone about 1775-80.
Robert Harreld apparently did not return to claim 170 acres of land willed to him in 1796 and it was sold a few years later for taxes. Mary Harroll Marshall, the daughter of James I received a tract of land on Rattle Creek from her father.
