From 'The Cowen Ancestors' written by a great-grandson, Albert A. Cowen.
My great-grandmother told her children about the sailing ship and in crossing the Atlantic, they encountered a great storm. The Captain was in fear their ship would sink so ordered baggage thrown overboard; they lost many valuable possessions.
The Edward Cowen who came to America in 1786 was the founder of the family in this country. Shortly after his arrival in the port of Philadelphia he was married to Elizabeth Pote who was herself but newly arrived from Germany (Switzerland), only speaking German; to this union 14 children were born.
