Widow's Service Pension Application, War of 1812, #44135 [24 May 2010]

Gayle...where would I order or find a copy of this document?--Metro09 14:57, 16 May 2010 (EDT)

Sorry for the delay. Mom just went into the hospital for emergency surgery.
You have to order it from NARA -- http://www.archives.gov, then on the left side bar, under "Order Online", then Order Reproductions, then Military Service and Pension Records, then Federal Military Pension Application
I got it with just James Jones and Polly Jones and War of 1812, but you could certainly add the application No. (44135), and anything else from the file that you think is appropriate. Cost is $50, which seems a bit steep, but there was a wealth of information in it.--GayelKnott 18:21, 19 May 2010 (EDT)

Yeah, $50 seems steep, but I think I may do it...that and a couple other documents I would like. On a side note...I will be visiting with my Grandfather Jones (Melvin son of Claude) who I have never really met (long story)...hoping to gather some information from him. Also I purchased James Knox Jones' obit (only $5...better deal...SMILE) and have that transcript posted (not sure if you saw that or not).

Lastly...I hope your mom is doing okay.

Thnaks. Mom is doing pretty well, give her age. Just saw the obit. Also saw the pictures you posted. Think this is great. (And am wondering why you don't want to "watch" the pages. If nothing else, "watching" lets you know when somebody changes something.)--GayelKnott 23:47, 22 May 2010 (EDT)

I do want to "watch" the pages...I am still trying to figure this site out (wish there was a way to "watch" a whole group with one click)...for example the photos posted were posted before, but I didn't connect them to the person properly. I'll need to go back and update. Thanks.

Learning your way around

I have to admit, learning your way around this site takes a bit of time, but I've also tried using Ancestry and another "share" site, and didn't find them any easier. And Ancestry, in my opinion, actually encourages bad genealogy.

The hardest thing, to begin with, was entering source information. It's easier now that the Source listings have been cleaned up, but still takes some getting used to (I think). Best way I know is to go ahead and try it on one or another of your pages (James K. Jones, if you want). The Portals under Help in the top right corner will take you to pages on Sources and MySources, as well. At some point you may also want to start watching the discussion at the Water Cooler, although at first it will seem really confusing (or did for me). But after awhile it begins to make sense.--GayelKnott 14:30, 24 May 2010 (EDT)
