The Rev. Joseph Smith of the parish of Birse in Aberdeenshire was fastidious in his record keeping. In particular, to the great boon of genealogists looking into Birse, he seems to have felt compelled to make a complete census of the inhabitants of his parish every few years. This practice seems to have been unique to him and to this parish. His lists of inhabitants were recorded in the Birse Kirk Session records in the years 1797, 1801, 1808, 1812, 1815, 1819, 1822, 1825.
