Betty,
Thanks for your email regarding the BUTT family.

As some of this information is from the I.G.I it will need "testing". This is done by taking a group of parishes around the subject parish and looking to see if there any alternative possibilities in each generation. Dorset is fortunate in having transcripts made of many of its parishes and a place where a name is prevalent usually comes to light rapidly. The original register is consulted on film. Copies of this film can then be made. If possible, further research is done in parish records through churchwardens accounts, overseers accounts, this is particularly useful if two individuals of the same name appear in neighbouring parishes at the same time.

Typically, an eighteenth century baptism will give the date of the baptism the name of the child and the name of the mother and father. Sometimes at the beginning of the period only the father's name will appear on the record. This was common practice in the 17th century, A marriage after 1754 was on a printed form and typically can give a lot of information. For example it is often mentioned if one or both spouses are from another parish. Also witnesses to the match are included and the parties sign if they were literate. Before 1754 the entry will only be date of the marriage and the names of the parties.

Burials can be the most difficult records to trust and validate. Some clergy were mean with information and space [registers were expensive!] giving only a date and a name. Some would add 'son of or 'daughter of if it was child being buried and often a woman would be described as ‘wife of’ or ‘widow of.’.

One thing is certain that before 1754 with marriages and 1813 with burials and baptisms there were no rules and the amount of information any record can give the researcher is down to the vicar of the day! I hope this has made clear the type of documentation available from parish registers in the 18th and 17th centuries, and the method I would apply to prove this tree back into the 17th century-

Best wishes Antony

Pre 1813 Parish Register entries

From Antony Broad: Each entry is transcribed in order to make identification easier. Record Office printing results in a copy which has black writing on a white background. Photographing the entries results in white writing on a black background, which I hope is easier to read as some entries are very faded.

Editor: The list was originally followed by a series of negatives. The negatives were inverted and inserted after the appropriate list entry. Entries 7-9 were not included. Entries 1-5 all appear in Winterborne Stickland and entries 6-11 appear in Winterborne Houghton
