Mississippi River Character Passes: Mary Elizabeth Carter, studio manager and announcer for radio station KFVD, of Venice, received news today of the death of her father, Capt. E. B. W. Nowland at Memphis, Tenn. The passing of Captain Nowland, at the age of 85 years, marks the close of a life that spanned the most pictureque period of the Mississippi river steamboat navigation. He began his career with mark Twain. The famous humorist was pilot of the "Dixie Bell" and Nowland was captain and owner. He was the oldest navigator on the Mississippi river. Captain Nowland will be buried in the Confederate cemetery at Fort Smith, Arkansas.
