  • 1750 - Maryland Tobacco Firm - Partner of his brother-in-law James Lawson in Maryland. Lawson who lived in Glasgow. Semple who lived in Maryland purchased tobacco, import it, and then sell it in the Glasgow markest for reexport.

Oct 26, 1752 from George Clarke of CC, merchant, to John Semple of CC, merchant, for 100 £ sterling, all that part or moiety of a tract of land, Mores (Moores) Ditch, bounded by the land of George & Robert Goodrick, containing about 234 acres in CC. Apr 3, 1753 from Robert Middleton of CC, planter, to John Semple of CC, merchant, for 3631 lbs of crop inspected tobacco, 1 Negro boy named string and 1 Negro girl named Linny. If, however, Middleton pays Semple 3631 lbs of crop inspected tobacco, with legal, interest, by next Oct 1, then these presents shall cease. I hereby agree to take no advantage of the above mortgage provided the above sd quantity of inspected tobacco with legal interest is paid to me or my order in Mar next, or so much more as shall be judged equal to inspected tobacco by 2 neutral persons in case of the Inspection Law "Droping H but otherwise to be in full force as above." Jun 26, 1753 from Alexander McClaron of CC, tailor, to John Semple of CC, merchant, for 3395 lbs crop inspected tobacco, 309 lbs transfer inspected tobacco, and 6 £ 4 shillings and 8 pence paper currency, one Negro man named Tom. If, however, NcClaron pays Semple the afd sums with legal interest, by next Dec 1, then this mortgage becomes void. I, William Parker of CC, planter, for 20,000 lbs of crop tobacco, sell to John Sample and James Campbell of CC. merchants, 1 Mulatto woman named Moll, 1 Mulatto girl named Patti and 1 Negro fellow named Harry, 20 cattle, 3 mares, 1 horse, 3 beds and furniture, and all the crop of corn and tobacco now growing upon the plantation where I am living at this time. If, however, I make a personal appearance at next Nov Court to he held at Charles Town, to answer the suits of Messrs John Jordan, Alexander Lothian, William Gamwell, Hugh Michell, John Fendall, Thomas Clark, and Susan Butler, and pay my debt to sd Sample, being 2300 lbs of crop tobacco and 4 £ 16 shillings, and also my debt of 377 lbs of crop tobacco due to sd James Campbell, by the 2nd Tuesday in next Nov, then these presents to be void. Nov 13, 1755 from William Boreman Jr of CC, planter, to John Sample and Company of CC, merchant, for 10,000 lbs of crop inspected tobacco, 1 Negro wench, Nance, and her child Harry and a Negro girl Lucy, and-their increase.   • 1756 - Feb. - Charles County Land Record Book A#2, 1752-1756; Page (443)- Jan 15, 1756 from Thomas Reeves of CC, planter, to John Semple of CC, for 15,350 lbs of crop tobacco and 39 shillings and for sd Semple discharging a certain mortgage made by sd Thomas Reeves to James Mills of St Mary's County, [hereby granted are) 3 Negro women, to wit, Nell, Jerry, Bess, and their increase, in the payment of such part of Ubgate Reeves' estate which should appear to be due to his children, now in the hands of the afd Thomas Reeves, as executor to the afd. Ubgate Reeves, when they should come of age or the same should be legally claimed, provided the same James Mills, as SerY [security?] for the afd Thomas Reeves on the administration afd, should pay the same, as by sd mortgage may appear. For the above reasons, Thomas Reeves hereby grants to John Semple the rest of that tract of land, being part of Causeens Manor in CC on the east side of Portobacco Cr adjoining the land belonging to the Roman Priest that William Causeen of CC sold to Ubgate Reeves of CC on Feb 15, 1715, bounded by the head of a branch of sd Cr afd called Ware Branch, containing about 134 acres, which is to say, that part of sd tract belonging to and now possessed by sd Thomas Reeves, containing about 50 acres, the other 80 acres of the tract being formerly sold by sd Thomas Reeves to Richard Molonux of CC, bounded by sd Lewis [Lines?] of the sd tract sold by sd William Causeen to sd Ubgate Reves and the lines of that part of sd tract sold by ad Thomas Reeves to sd Richard Mollynux, via CC deeds and records. To have and to hold, the land and 3 Negroes afd to sd John Semple, upon condition that if sd Thomas Reeves pays sd Semple, 15,350 lbs of crop tobacco & 39 shillings by Jan 15, 1762, with legal interest from Jan 15, 1748, and will pay the children of Ubgate Reeves afd their part of their father's estate when they come of age or when legally claimed by them, and pays legal interest to sd Sample on the payment of any money or tobacco which Semple shall pay to sd children or either of them on account of their father's estate afd, then these presents shall cease. Mar 10, 1755 from Robert Cato of CC, tailor, to John Semple of CC, merchant, for 2641.75 of crop inspected tobacco, 1 roan stallion called Dragon, 1 blazed focke dun mare, and 1 cherry tree desk, New England make. Jun 10, 1756 from Zachariah Wade of CC, planter, to John Semple of CC, merchant, for 20 shillings and 3000 lbs of crop tobacco, a tract of land in CC, being part of a certain tract of land called Senslers, bounded by Langoes Pint [Point] near Potomack River bank, containing and laid out for 100 acres, according to the certificate or survey thereof, returned to the Land Office. I, John Jordan of CC, merchant, for 400 £ sterling, 170 £ of which I have on hand that I have received before the sealing and delivery of these presents from John Semple, merchant of CC, in partial consideration of a bond given by sd John Semple to sd John Jordan for the afd 400 £, he it therefore known that I, John Jordan, sell to John Semple, the vessel I built in Charles Town Cr in Wicomico River, CC, and now lying at Nanjumoy in Potomack River, now called the Charming Sally. This certifies that 1, John Semple of CC, merchant, hereby let out and hire unto Francis Triplett (Tripplett) of CC, planter, Negroes named Robin & Kate (which I have this day purchased of him) for 5 £ 10 shillings and 994 lbs of crop tobacco, until Oct 24, 17_3, when the afd hire is to be then paid me, If either Negro dies before then, Triplett must pay me their true value, viz, 45 [£] 18 shillings .. 6223W lbs of crop tobacco with legal interest thereafter besides the afd 5 £ 10 shillings and 2 pence and 94 lbs of crop tobacco. (Thomas Reeves also grants to sd John Semple, 3 Negro women now the property of sd Thomas Reeves, named Nell, Terry, & Bess, with their future increase. If, however, sd Thomas Reeves pays sd John Semple 15,350 lbs of crop tobacco and 39 shillings by Jan 15, 1762, with legal interest from Jan 15, 1748, and also pays to the children of Ubgate Reeves afd, their part of their father's estate, when they shall come of age to receive the same or when the same shall be by them legally claimed, and also pays legal interest to sd John Semple on the payment of any sum of money or tobacco which sd John Semple shall pay to sd children on account of their parts of their father's estate from the time he pays the same, then these presents shall be void. It is agreed that John Semple should not be called upon nor pay to the children of Ubgate Reeves their legal claims in their father's estate within 6 years of today, provided Thomas Reeves gives John Semple sufficient security to pay to sd children their estates afd whenever sd Thomas Reeves shall, after the expiration of the time afd, be legally required. It is agreed between Maximilian Matthews of CC, planter, and John Semple of CC, merchant, for and in consideration of two debts of the amount of forty odd thousand lbs of tobacco and five odd shillings due by sd Matthews to sd Semple _any by bonds that the sd Matthews hereby sells, disposes of and conveys to sd Semple, viz, a tract of land called Argyle, lying in CC & containing about. 150 acres of land, as by patent, .. Negroes named Ceasar, Roger, Winn, and Doll, her child, towards the payment of sd debts, and the same to be evaluated by Capt. Gerrard Fowke and Richa .. are chosen by sd Matthews and set a price upon them and which the sd Matthews .. to deliver and .. to sd Semple ,_ with lawful deeds. I, Charles Hungerford of CC, planter, for 24 £ 16 shillings and 4 pence sterling and 21,260 lbs of crop tobacco, sell to John Semple and Company of CC, merchants, the 6 Negro slaves following, to wit, Great Sam, Little Sam, Tom, Hannah, James otherways called Jam, and Darea. If, however, sd Hungerford, by Mar 1, 1767, pays to sd John Semple and company, not only the afd sums of 24 £ 16 shillings and 4 pence sterling and 21,260 lbs of crop tobacco, but also the legal interest, then the above deed of gift shall become void.
