The Lords of Cartside

  • Semple, William Alexander. Genealogical History of the Family Semple: From 1214 to 1888. (Hartford, Connecticut: Press of the Case, Lockwood & Brainard Co., 1888), Page 49.
252. John Semple, who married Margaret Atkine, the heiress of Balgreen (which lands lie in the northwestern part of the parish of Lochwinnoch). He obtained the lands of Longcraft and Muirshield from James, Earl of Abercorn, August 26, 1642. He also had a charter granted by William Lord Cochran and Dundonald of the lands of Queenside-Muir, dated October 13, 1655. In Queenside-Muir a high hill is situated called the Hill of the Stake, and Queenside Loch, out of which the river Calder hath its source, which empties into Castle-Semple Loch (Lochwinnoch), below the house of Barr. John Semple of Balgreen, died in 1679, and left issue.

III. 256. John Semple, died February 1758, leaving issue by his wife, Janet Cochran, who predeceased her husband, October, 1751, three sons and four daughters.

IV. 262. John Semple, eldest son of John Semple, purchased the lands of Cartside from Patrick Crawfurd of Auchinames about the year 1750, and rebuilt the house and office houses in 1754. The lands of Cartside were the southmost lands of the Barony of Auchinames, lying upon the north side of the river Black Cart. He left issue:

James Semple, eldest son of John Semple of Cartside, sold the lands of Cartside to William Barr of Braes and Goldenknows, April 15, 1774, and emigrated to America, July 11, 1774, with a wife and seven children. They are said to have settled in North Carolina, but no trace of them or their descendants have I been able to obtain. Signed, W. W. Semple, Broad Brook, Conn.

268. Alexander Semple, second son of John Semple of Cartside, married Mary Brodie of Dampton farm, and by her had issue:

265. William Semple, second son of John Semple (256), possessed the lands of Easter Kaimhill and Boakshill from May, 1740, to May, 1746. He married Janet Taylor, January 18, 1746, by whom he had two sons, born Wednesday, May 10, 1747 (ie. baptism date), both at a birth. The mother died the 17th of the same month. The father died Jue 24, 1773, aged 58 years.

266. 1. William Semple, historian, son of William Semple of Easter Kaimhill, was author of Semple's Continuation of Crawfurd's History of the Shire of Renfrew, 1710 to 1782. The work contains a genealogical history of the Royal House of Stewart, with a genealogical account of the illustrious House of Hanover from the time of their intermarriage with the Stewart family to 1710, also a genealogical history of the Nobility and Gentry of the County of Renfrew, and an exact survey of the county; together with the state of the public buildings, manufactures, different religions, etc., etc., collected from Public Records, Ancient Chartularies of the Monasteries of Paisley, Arbroath, Kelso, Dunfermine, Melross, Balmerinoch, Schoon, Dryburgh, Cambushkenneth, Aberdeen, and Murray; and from the best historians and private manuscripts, from the year 1084 to 1782. It also contains the coat of arms of each family in blazon.
