INVENTORY
IN THE
SUCCESSION OF
CAPTAIN JOHN J. SHAFFER

PURSUANT TO and by virtue of the authority in me vested by an order rendered and signed by the Hon. H. M. Wallis, Judge of the 20th Judicial District Court in and for the Parish of Terrebonne, State of Louisiana, in the matter entitled "Succession of Captain John J. Shaffere," No. 1401 of the docket of said Court, and commission issued to me, Notary, to take the inventory of the property of said Succession in the Parish of Orleans, assisted by John L. Couturier and L. Sauer, two competent appraisers, which said commission, together with the order of Court is hereto attached and made a part hereof;

BE IT KNOWN, That on this the 17th day of the month of January, in the year of Our Lord one thousand, nine hundred and nineteen, and of the Independence of he United States of America, the one hundred and forty-third.,

Before me, ROBERT C. MILLING, a Notary Public, duly commissioned and qualified, within and for the Parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, therein residing, and in the presence of the witnesses hereinafter named and undersigned, personally came and appeared:

(1) MR. JOHN D. SHAFFER and MRS. ANNIE LAURIE VAN SYCKEL, two of the Executors of the Last Will and Testament of Captain John J. Shaffer, the remaining executor, Mrs. MinervaAnn Shaffer residing in the Parish of Terrebonne, State of Louisiana, and not being able to attend the taking of this inventory in the City of New Orleans;

(2) MESSRS. JOHN L. COUTURIER and L. SAUER, Appraisers, duly appointed by the Court to make the appraisement herein.

Before proceeding to take the inventory herein, I, said Notary, did administer to said appraisers, John L. Couturier and L. Sauer, the following oath, to-wit:

WHEREFORE, the said Notary and the said appraisers, in the presence of the witnesses and the said appraisers, did proceed to make the following inventory and appraisement of said property in the offices of the safe deposit vault of the Whitney-Central National Bank in the City of New Orleans, to-wit:

The following described property being contained in Box 1537, which is in the names of JOHN J. SHAFFER and MRS. MINERVA ANN SHAFFER, and Box 2283, which is in the name of JOHN J. SHAFFER:

  • New Orleans municipal bonds = $5,275.00.
  • New Orleans Public improvement bonds = $5.212.00.
  • U.S. Govt. bonds = $36,400.00.
  • New Orleans constitutional bonds = $6,375.00.
  • U.S. Govt. bonds = $3,480.00.
  • U.S. Govt. bonds = $1,090.00.
  • New Orleans Public improvement bonds = $5,772.50.
  • U.S. Currency = $5,000.00.
  • U.S. Currency = $3,000.00.
  • Lien and mortgage note = $14,260.00. "This note being legally prescribed, it was appraised at Nothing."
  • Liens and mortgage notes = $28,500.
  • Promissory note (John D. Shaffer) = $50,000.00. "This note being legally prescribed, it was appraised at Nothing."
  • Promissory note (Effie Shaffer Reymond)= $4,362.14. "This note being legally prescribed, it was appraised at Nothing."
  • Promissory note (Bessie Shaffer) = $5,000.00. "This note being legally prescribed, it was appraised at Nothing."
  • Promissory note (Bessie Shaffer) = $4,362.14. "This note being legally prescribed, it was appraised at Nothing."
  • Promissory note (Thomas A. Shaffer) = $695.00. "This note being legally prescribed, it was appraised at Nothing."
  • Promissory note (Margaret Lee Granbery) = $4,362.14. "This note being legally prescribed, it was appraised at Nothing."
  • Draft of Thomas A. Shaffer = $150.00. "The within sight draft was drawn without authority from me." (Also several personal letters "mentioned merely as memorandum.")
  • New Orleans public improvement bonds = $5,212.50.
  • Promissory note (Marguerite L. Granbery) = $100.00. "This note being legally prescribed, it was appraised at Nothing."
  • Promissory note (Annie L. Bartlett) = $455.25. "This note being legally prescribed, it was appraised at Nothing."
  • Promissory note (Bessie Shaffer Letcher) = $5,000.00. "This note being legally prescribed, it was appraised at Nothing."
  • Promissory note (Marguerite L. Granbery) = $500.00. "This note being legally prescribed, it was appraised at Nothing."

  • Will of Mrs. John J. Shaffer (left unopened).

  • Stock certificates (Crescent-Magnolia Co.) = $12,500.00.
  • Several dozen envelopes of miscellaneous receipts & acknowledgements in family & business matters.
  • U.S. gold bonds = $11,600.00.
  • U.S. gold bonds = $11,600.00.
  • U.S. Govt. bonds = $10,800.
  • U.S. Govt. bonds = $8,120.00.
  • U.S. Govt. bonds = $11,060.00.
  • U.S. First Liberty Loan bonds = $99.50.
  • U.S. Second Liberty Loan bonds = $2,437.50.
  • U.S. Third Liberty Loan bonds = $1,002.50.
  • U.S. Third Liberty Loan bonds = $1,002.50.

Said Notary and said appraisers were then informed that there was another box in the vaults of the Whitney-Central national Bank, being No. 4152 in the name of MRS MINERVA ANN SHAFFER or JOHN J. SHAFFER, but as the Executors had no key, the same was not opened, the understanding being that the taking of the inventory of the contents of said box would resume on Monday, January 20, 1919, at the hours of ten o'clock A.M.

Having finished the inventory and appraisement as above, we, the said Notary and appraisers, together with the said witnesses, proceeded to the banking house of the New Orleans National Bank in the City of New Orleans, and did proceed to make the following inventory and appraisement of the property of said Succession at that Bank, as follows:

  • Cash on deposit = $9,575.25.
  • U.S. Treasury check = $350.00.
  • U.S. Treasury check = $350.00.

[both checks delivered by a bank officer to the executors]

Having finished the inventory and appraisement as above, we, the said Notary and appraisers, together with the said witnesses proceeded to the banking house of the Canal Bank & Trust Co. in the City of New Orleans, and did proceed to make the following inventory and appraisement of the property of said Succession at that Bank, as follows:

  • Cash on deposit = $8,807.94.

It now being the hour of 1:00 o'clock P.M., I, Notary, have adjourned the further taking of this inventory until Monday, January 20, 1919, at 10:00 o'clock A.M., and the said parties have hereunto signed their names with said witnesses and me, Notary, after due reading of the whole.

Pursuant to adjournment aforesaid, the said appearers, appraisers and witnesses convened at the Offices of the safe deposit vault of the Whitney-Central National Bank in the City of New Orleans, La., at the hour of 10:00 o'clock A.M., this Monday, January 20, 1919, where we proceeded to take an inventory and make an appraisement of the property and effects of said Succession in Box No. 4152, which is in the name of MRS. MINERVA ANN SHAFFER or JOHN J. SHAFFER.

Before opening said Box No. 4152, however, MR. JOHN D. SHAFFER and MRS ANNIE LAURIE VAN SYCKEL announced that their mother, MRS. MINERVA ANN SHAFFER, had informed them, prior to their departure from the City of Houma, that the contents of said box were her personal property and that she objected to the opening of said box if by opening same it should be contended that any of the securities therein contained belonged to the SUCCESSION OF CAPTAIN JOHN J. SHAFFER, and that if such attempt should be made to claim that the contents of said box belonged to said Succession, then she solemnly protested against the opening of said box and that the same is done over her protest and without her consent.

Said Box No. 4152 contained the following:

  • U.S. Govt. bonds = $5,700.00.
  • Stock certificates (Istrouma Hotel Co.) = 25 shares @ $100. "Mentioned merely as memorandum."
  • Istrouma Hotel Co. bonds = $2,675.00.
  • Stock certificates (People's Bank of Houma) = 10 shares @ $100. "Mentioned merely as memorandum."
  • Stock certificates (Bank of Houma) = 10 shares @ $100. "Mentioned merely as memorandum."
  • Stock certificates (Mid-Continent Townsite & Oil Co) = 400 shares @ $25. "Mentioned merely as memorandum."
  • Stock certificates (Orient Oil & Gas Co.) = $400 shares @ $25. "Mentioned merely as memorandum."

There being no further property to be herein inventoried, within the knowledge of the said appraisers or me, Notary, and nothing further having been pointed out to us as belonging to the said Succession within the Parish of Orleans, I Notary, have closed this inventory with the following:

RECAPITULATION:

Cash in bank boxes = $16,000.00.
Cash in checking accounts = $18,433.90.
Appraised value of promissory notes = $28,500.00.
Appraised value of bonds = $$164,429.50.
Appraised value of corporation stocks = $12,500.00.
Appraised value of bank stocks = $12,800.00.
Appraised value of sight draft = $150.00.
Appraised value of treasury checks = $700.00.

TOTAL OF INVENTORY = $253,513.40.

THUS DONE, INVENTORIES AND SIGNED on the respective dates herein above set forth, in the presence of R. R. Ramos and E. L. Szabary, competent witnesses, who hereunto sign their names with the said appraisers and me, Notary, after due reading of the whole.
