This Series consists of various records relating to the administration of H.M. Gaol, Geelong (VA 1003).

The single volume extant in the P1 consignment of this series, which was maintained between 1851 and 1868, comprises a number of sections each relating to a different aspect of the gaol's administration. The volume has been used from both ends. On one cover there is embossed "Gaol Rules and Punishments. Turnkeys". One the first page inside this cover there is an index which relates to the following sections:

a) transcriptions of Acts, Rules and Regulations relating to the administrations of Gaols, dating from 1840 through to 1855.

b) record of punishments inflicted on prisoners for misconduct. Covering the period 5 June 1851 to December 1868, the details recorded in chronological order include:

- date of punishment - number (of prisoner)? - name of prisoner - offence - punishment - by whom the punishment was ordered - remarks.


c) record of turnkeys appointed. A turnkey was a person who looked after prison keys. Covering the period 5 February 1851 to October 1867, the details recorded in chronological order include:

- date of appointment - name of turnkey - how disposed of - date disposed of.

d) record of turnkeys reported for misconduct. Covering the period December 1855 to November 1868, the details recorded in chronological order include:

- date reported - offence and charge - by whom reported - punishment - by whom ordered - remarks.

On the other cover, when inverted, there is embossed the title "Letter Book" and from this end the volume includes the following sections:

e) Requisitions for the gaol for the period 10 February 1851 to June 1862. Details recorded in chronological order include:

- date of requisition - description of articles - when articles received (date and quantity).

f) Record of variously, Salaries, Estimates, Provisions, Incidental Expenses, Establishment and Expenditure between 1851 and 1860.
