Overview

Meadow Creek John Walker (MCJW), with his wife Mary and family settled on Meadow Creek in Greene County shortly after the Revolution. John died there in 1796. YDNA evidence shows that John had kinsmen in the area, including in particular a Joseph Walker who witnessed Johns will, and believed to be his brother. Joseph settled on Horse Creek some miles to the north of where John settled. One of Johns sons, Anderson Walker, settled in that same area, but later moved down to Meadow Creek, apparently to care for his aged parents. Another of John's sons, Thomas Walker, moved south to Blount County TN, settling in Tuchaleechee Cove. about 1800. Thomas had a substantial family, and left numerous descendants in the area. Joseph Walker and son Isaiah, also moved to this area, though somewhat later than Tom and his family. Joseph is believed to have died in Blount county within a few years. At that time Isaiah moved first to the nearby Kingston area, and later moving to Alabama.

There are numerous genealogical issues with this family. The most significant of these confusions are:

  • The first name of John Walkers wife was "Mary", based on his estate and probate record. Her last name is commonly given as "Anderson", though direct evidence for this is lacking. Genealogist may have assumed her last name was "Anderson", based on the name of the couple's eldest son, Anderson Walker.
  • Meadow Creek John Walker (MCJW) is often identified as John Walker IV of the Wigton Walker line. In part this is probably because one of MCJW's daughters married a Charles Kilgore who settled near John on Meadow Creek. This Charles is well documented as having come to the area from southeast Virginia where he lived adjacent to John Walker III, father of John IV, of the Wigton Walker line. John IV left southwest Virginia immediately after the Revolution at about the same time that MCJW settled on Meadow Creek. John IV, however, did not settle on Meadow Creek, but moved south to Blount County, living on the Little River, a few miles from where Thomas Walker, son of Meadow Creek John, would later settle. John IV would locally be known as Granddaddy John Walker (particular among descendants of Thomas Walker) and more broadly as "Indian Killer". Despite the fact that many think John IV was the same person as Meadow Creek John, YDNA evidence for the Wigton Walkers is not consistent with similar evidence for the line of MCJW. Moreover, documentation for Indian Killer shows him living well into the 19th Ccentury, while MCJW is well documented as dying in Greene County in 1796.

Kit Data

The following summarizes information about the oldest known ancestor given for each test kit. Note that the information in the the FTDNA Database is "user supplied" and not necessarily in agreement with what is found in the person card on WeRelate. For example, the DOB and POB for John (193) is sometimes given in the user data as "1740, Washington County VA". The 1740 DOB is plausible but unproven. It is probably based on a back calculation based on him being 20 years of age at marriage, and that he was married about 1760 based on DOB for his eldest child. However, he could not have been born in Washington County VA, as that area was not settled until 1769. In some cases more information is available about an individual than given by the kit owner. In the case of the father and mother, the kit owner may not have accepted readily available , but inaccurate information about the eldest known ancestor. Where there is a reasonable case to be made for an older "eldest ancestor" it has been included.

Isaiah would later move first to the Kingston area, then to Alabama.

Edwards and Frizell give him as the son of John Walker and Sarah McConnel of Blount County, son of James M, son of Thomas, son of John (193). His haplotype, however, does not match the MCJW YDNA line. Local Walker family members cite the son of John and Sarah McConnell Walker to be William A. Walker and William Houston Walker to be a descendant of IKJW.
