Mathew Howard is known to have been in Virginia by at least 26 May 1638 when he patented 150 acres in the Lower County of New Norfolk, East upon the West branch of the Elizabeth River, and North upon the broad creek running out of the said branch. Due for the transportation of his wife Ann and two other persons. (pg 89 of Cavaliers and Pioneers by Nell Marion Nugent.
