Text

No Officer More Popular Than Lieut. Colonel Rhea
Eagle Bureau
77th Division, National Army.

Camp Upton, L.I., January 7 -- You can see him any day in camp. He walks briskly about and he smiles. If an officer salutes him he smiles. If the rawest recruit in the cantonment salutes, he smiles again. The smile does not encourage familiarity. Rather does it discourage any inclination to take advantage of his good nature. Some times he rides. Always does he carry a riding crop and afoot or astride his carriage indicates as clearly as would a printed sign -- "Regular Army."

The man in question is Lieutenant Colonel James C. Rhea, 305th Infantry. It is safe to say that the camp holds no man more popular. He is popular with the men because the men are quite popular with him. His frequent walks about camp are not aimless wanderings. He walks for pleasure--on the surface. Really he is criticising every minute of the day, and yet a critical word has yet to pass his lips. He is tightening up discipline all along the line of the regiment, but he has yet to administer his first "bawling out." He produces results by the indirect method, which by the way, is mighty direct when administered by Lieutenant Colonel James C. Rhea.

If in the course of his daily walk he finds an officer who is not getting the most out of his men he does not appear to notice. It is doubtful if he even pauses in his stride. Yet within a few hours the officer will engage in a conversation during which a kindly suggestion is offered. There is nothing in the offer to indicate that a shortcoming has been detected. He knows and the officer knows he knows. Mistakes are not repeated in the 305th Infantry.
