Family talk:Joseph Emerson and Anne White (1)

Dubious Chronology [9 December 2012]

Rev. Pope's chronology for this family does not make sense. He gives Joseph Emerson one child, John, born when Joseph was about 63 years of age, 41 years after the date of his (only?) marriage. The woman who he married in 1719 would not have been young enough to bear a child in 1760. The most likely scenario, assuming that the rest of Pope's sketch of Joseph Emerson is accurate, is that Joseph Emerson, rather late in life, married a second, much younger woman named Anne who would have to have been born not much earlier than 1715 in order to be the mother of Joseph's only known child.

The published Newbury vital records, 2:588, have "Ann (Emerson), wid. Joseph, [died] Dec. 27, 1798." It cannot be positively determined that this record refers to the widow of this Joseph Emerson. It also cannot be determined where Rev. Pope got the 27 December 1806 date of death for "Ann, widow of Joseph Emerson"
