Family talk:John Warner and Priscilla Symonds (1)

Two John Warners? [24 April 2009]

Source:Vital records of Ipswich, Massachusetts, to the end of the year 1849, p. 1:383 also contains the following births not listed here:

  • Warner, Abigaill, d. John, Oct. 18, 1681. CT.R.
  • Warner, Elizabeth, d. John, June 3, 1666. CT.R.
  • Warner, Hanah, d. John, May 14, 1674. CT.R.
  • Warner, William, s. John, Sep. 22, 1672. CT.R.
  • Warner, William, s. John, June 20, 1673. CT.R.
  • Warner, William, s. John, Mar. 2, 1678. CT.R.

which follow the other Ipswich births attributed to this John in style and in their reliance on court records.

So this page suggest the following children: Samuel-1641, Joanna-1643, Mark-1646, Nathaniel-1650, Oliver-1655, William-1663, Joanna-1664 all born said to be born in Ipswich but which do not show up in the recorded births.

The following births are recorded to a "John" in Ipswich, all in the same style; mentioned on this page: Joseph-1657, Mehitable-1659, Daniel-1660, Eleazer-1662; then not mentioned: Elizabeth-1666, William-1672, William-1673, Hanah-1674, William-1678, Abigail-1681.

Finally, Priscilla-1666 is recorded in Ipswich but appears to belong to Samuel, not John. And John-1649, John-bef. 1655 do not appear in Ipswich, but are said to have been born in Hadley uniquely among the children. Neither of these younger Johns appear to be old enough to be Elizabeth's father, and assuming the first one died young, too young to father the early Williams and Hanah.

This is not my family, and I don't know anything about it except the VRs from Ipswich, I am just merging duplicate families. However, to my outside eye, this appears to be at least 2 separate families (except for Priscilla whose father does not appear to be any John.) For what it is worth, a family consisting of Mark, John, Nathaniel, Joseph, Mehitable, Daniel, Eleazer is mentioned in the History of Hadley by Sylvester Judd.

Two John Warners!

The other (younger) one was son of the first Daniel, the brother of this John. John2's surviving children, except for Samuel (died at Groton, Mass.) and Joanna (died at Wenham) (very likely John's daughter) stayed in the Connecticut Valley after their father's removal there from Brookfield ca. 1675. John3 (Daniel2) married Hannah Batchelder/Bachelor in 1665 then Mary (-----) Prince ca. 1692. Hoyt says that John3 had nine children starting with Elizabeth in 1666.

Hoyt (Old Families Salisbury Amesbury) gives John2 and Priscilla nine children. The Priscilla that he attributes to them was really daughter of John's eldest son Samuel3. He does not mention Joanna. Linzee (Parker-Ruggles) gives them ten including Joanna: (1) Samuel m. Mercy Swan; (2) Joanna m. Robert Mackclaflin; (3) Mark m. Abigail Montague and Mary (Orton) Root; (4) John m. Lydia Boltwood, Sarah (Roe) Warner, Sarah Ferry and Rebecca (Williams) Cooley; (5) Nathaniel m. Joanna Gardner; (6) Daniel, d.y.; (7) Joseph, d.y.; (8) Mehitable, d. unm.; (9) Daniel, d.y.; (10) Eleazer m. Hester Taylor. John3 moved on to Springfield; descendants of Mark3, Nathaniel3, and Eleazer3 are treated in Boltwood's Genealogies of Hadley Families. Hoyt also appears to be the source of the possible first wife preceding Priscilla Symonds: "John,2 b. ab. 1616, [1st, -----; 2d?] Priscilla Symonds." The brackets indicate that he was not sure. Subsequent treatments, including that of Linzee and Robert Charles Anderson, give John one wife, Priscilla Symonds.

From the published Ipswich vital records, we get the following:

1:383-Hanah, d. John, (born) May 14, 1674. CTR. 2:705-Hannah, d. John and Hannah, (died) July 4, 1696.

1:383-Abigaill, d. John, (born) Oct. 18, 1681. CTR. 2:705-Abigaill, d. John, (died) Dec. 22. 1681. CTR.
1:384-Nathaniel, s. John and Mary, (born ) July 6, 1693.
1:384-Mary, d. John and Mary, (born) Aug. 18, 1695.
1:383-Abigail, d. John and Mary, (born) Apr. 8, 1697.
2:705-John. s. John, (died) July 24, 1697.

NOTE: CTR denotes Essex Co. Quarterly Court records; early Ipswich town records were lost in a fire.

There is no birth record for the John who died in 1697. Since the father was John and the wife's father was also John, it would be reasonable to place him as the first son, somewhere between Elizabeth and the first William. It's also worth noting that the interval between the recorded births of the first and the second William is almost exactly nine months, and that there's only one death record for the two of them.--jaques1724 18:20, 12 January 2012 (EST)
