Sargent has a rather thorough explanation to show that Benjamin was the only surviving child of Thomas (who died at age 33). (See Source:The Maine historical and genealogical recorder (318894), 2:100.) This included a "genealogical execution" of a mythical Joseph named by many sources, especially Willis in his History of Portland, in Source:Collections of the Maine Historical Society (248063). Briefly, citing Mr. Willis himself as a source, he says that Mrs. Wilkins (Mary Lewis after third marriage) in court "does attest her maternity to Benjamin by her former husband, Thomas Skillings, but no where does she claim other issue by him." Regarding other children, Sargant says: "'a deposition is found on record by the widow of Thomas Skillin, Jr. in which she testifies that she was a married woman with three children at the time the inhabitants in 1676 fled to the garrison on Cushing's Island to escape the Indians.' Based on this, one would assume there were only three children, only one of whom survived - Benjamin. Thomas and Abigail were the other two."
