Immigrant ancestor of this Riggs family, Thomas was Town Clerk of Gloucester for 51 years. He served as Selectman for 20 years and as representative in the General Court in 1700. In 1696 he was engaged as a Gloucester teacher. His pay was 1 shilling 6 pence per day when actually employed as a schoolmaster. [Source: Frederick W. Tibbets, "The Story of Gloucester, Massachusetts," an address presented September 21, 1916 before the Convention of the Massachusetts State Fireman's Association at City Hall, Gloucester. Heritage Quest Online]. The house he occupied in Gloucester in 1640 is one of three remaining squared log construction home.

Riges, Thomas, and Mary Millit, d. Thomas, [married] June 7, 1658.

Wallace (p. 120) gives a marriage date of 1656, but this is 2 years before he states Thomas settled in Gloucester. Almost certainly an editorial error since the first mention of Thomas Riggs in contemporary New England records appears to be his 1658 marriage to Mary Millett.
