He enlisted in Co. E, 17th Regiment, Ohio Volunteers Infantry on 19 Feb 1864 at West Middleburg, Ohio by R.T. Foster for 3 years. He was mustered in 23 Feb 1864 at Urbana, Ohio by Capt. A.C. Deull. His occupation was listed as farming. On 29 Aug 1864 Albert was sent to Milford Center, Ohio and back at a cost of $3.95 that was charged against his pay. Albert was admitted to Hospital No. 233 21 Dec 1864 on a transfer from Dennison with a diagnosis of scurvy. He was furloughed 4 Apr for 15 days and returned 19 Apr 1865. He was discharged 6 May 1865. On 19 Jul 1864 he was admitted to Hospital 5490 from Cumberland, Nashville. His diagnosis was chronic diarrhea. The was transferred to Camp Dennison, Ohio 11 Aug. He was discharged at Columbus, Ohio 6 May 1865 by order of General Hooker. "Certificate of Disability for Discharge for Albert Spain of Captain John S. Ely's Co. (E) of 17th Ohio Regiment...discharged because of chronic periostitis and inflammation of the aneola tissue of left leg with extensive aedema of whole limb, having long resisted treatment. Is of serofuluous deathesis and in my opinion is permanently disabled. Contracted since enlistment. Unfit for V.R.C."

He was honorably discharged 6 Mar 1865 "when building breast works at Kanesaw Mountain, about the 27th day of June AD 1864, his left ankle was mashed by a log rolling on it which has never healed and from the efforts of said injury he is scarcely able to go about and isunable to follow his occupation being a laboring farmer."
