THE announcement of the first engagement among the season's debutantes was an interesting bit of last weeks history, The romance goes back to the childhood days of Miss Van Buren arid it could not go back very far without doing so as the announcement of her engagement to the Rev Mr Stanley Matthews Cleveland was made the day after she was 19. Mr Cleveland was a frequent visitor here at the home of his grandfather, the late Mr Justice Stanley Matthews, of the Supreme bench, and was here with other young relatives for the Christmas holidays not long before the death of his stepgrandmother, the late Mrs. Matthews, at her home in I street when he was a seminarian. This marriage will be one of the most interesting of the post Easter weddings.
