The Identity of the Wife of Samuel Canfield

"James Savage in his Genealogical Dictionary, 1860, vol. I, p. 332, supposed that Sarah Willoughby's husband was Samuel Canfield, baptised 19 Oct. 1645, eldest son of Matthew of New Haven. Conn. However, both Frederick A. Canfield in his History of Thomas Canfield and of Matthew Canfield, 1897. p. 104. and the Rev. Charles M. Selleck in his Norwalk. 1896. p. 286-7, state that this Samuel married Elizabeth Willoughby. It seems then (although I have not had an opportunity to check the records) that Samuel Canfield is known to have had a wife named Elizabeth. She certainly could not have been Elizabeth Willoughby, for there is no record of such a woman. I believe that she was Elizabeth Merwin, daughter of Miles Merwin of Milford. Conn. This Elizabeth was born before 1650 and was named in the inventory of her father's estate, dated 12 May 1697, as Elizabeth Canfield (Savage, op. cit., vol. 3. p. 201)."[2]
