Family Memorial : Genealogy of Ephraim and Sarah Thayer, with Their Fourteen Children ; from the Time of Their Marriage to 1835, with shows Mercy marrying Samuel, s/o Thomas, but that Samuel died in 1690, and Alexander Marsh in his March 1696/97 will made a bequest to "Son-in-law Samuel Bass", ruling out that Samuel. Samuel, s/o Samuel m. 1678 Rebecca Faxon), by process of elimination, it must be Samuel, s/o John that married Mercy Marsh.
