Salem documents refer to Richard as the "son-in-law" of William Plasse. William was his step-father, and the word could also refer to that relationship, so his wife was not necessarily a Plasse.

[Note:, see TAG, Vol. 81, p. 175: Richard's mother m. (2) William Plasse, explaining the "son-in-law" reference. "Richard's use of the term 'father-in-law' has been interpreted in the modern sense with resultant confusion about his wife's maiden name."]
