Richard and Elvira had nine children, two sons and seven daughters.

Richard was 47 years old when he died.

Richard's obituary reads, "Services for Richard J. Ryan, 47, of 4215 Indiana Ave. will be at 9 a.m. Friday in Tom Mungovan Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Msgr. Stanley L. Manoski officiating. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Ryan died at 11:48 p.m. Monday in Mercy Hospital, Gary, after a heart attack while on a business trip there. He was a sales representative for M. & J. Valve Co., Houston, Tex. Born in Fort Wayne, he was a member of St. John the Baptist Church here and Elks Lodge 155. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. Surviving are his wife, Elvira; children... all at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester C. Ryan, Fort Wayne; a brother, Donald, Fort Wayne; and three sisters... Mrs. Joan Gaskill, Dixon, Ohio, and ... Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday." [Monday 13 September 1971]
