The order of children given in this source, which may be based on the order they are mentioned in the division of the estate, gives the second child, Richard, b. 18 Nov 1655, suggesting a marriage about 1652 and first child born about 1653.

  2.   Several sources (e.g., Bosson, Waters, Snow-Estes) list a daughter Mary as the oldest child (i.e., b. abt. 1653) and show her m. Michael Derich. This is belied by the will of Anthony Newhall, dated 14 Jul 1656, which only names grandchildren Richard and Elizabeth Hood.

A daughter Mary is mentioned in the division of Richard Hood's estate, and appears to be the oldest daughter. While the sources cite above merely parrot exactly the same short abstract, leaving the line between documented and assumed unclear, Essex Genealogist, p. 18:52, provides an independent abstract, confirming the information and adding that it comes from "Essex Probate 13782; Copy Book, 305:103-104; 179-180; 218-9". As far as births are known, it appears to follow birth order.

Creating yet more confusion regarding Mary, Anderson, Vol I (A-B), p. 193, says Mary, d/o William Bassett not d/o Richard Hood, b. Mar 1657, m. "Michael Derich (or Derrick or Rich)". Essex Genealogist, p. 18:29, adds Ruck to the list of surname alternatives, since the 1701 will of William Bassett names his daughter as Mary Ruck. Is this the same Michael Derich? Bosson says Mary (Hood) DeRich was accused and imprisoned for practising witchcraft. Since the arrest warrant 23 May 1692 is for "Mary Derich ye wife of Michall Derich and daufter of William Basset of Lyn", Bosson appears to have made an error. (Unless one user query seen in Essex Genealogist, p. 16:232, is correct in suggesting Michael DeRich married again in January 1689, meaning he could have married both?!?!)

With everything said about the daughter Mary called into serious question, what can we say that we know for sure? Without a recorded birth, and not knowing if she married, it is hard to even guess a birth date, and so to try to divine where she fits in the birth order. If we trust the distribution to reflect birth order, making Mary the oldest brings up the question of whether she was the daughter of an earlier wife, to explain why she was left out of Anthony Newhall's will.
