He was mustered out on January 30, 1862, at Columbus, Ohio. He then enlisted in Company K, Ohio 96th Infantry Regiment on October 26, 1863. He was mustered out July 6, 1865. He was transferred to Company C, Ohio 77th Infantry Regiment on July 6, 1865. He received a disability discharge from Company C. He was mustered out August 5, 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi.

In 1870, Philander and Mary were living in Sharon Township in Fayette County, Illinois, with five children, Robert, Louis, Osias, Eliza, and Wm. Philander was farming rented land and had $500 in personal property. In 1880, Philander and Mary were living again in Sharon Township in Fayette County, Illinois, with their son William. Philander was farming. In 1900, Philander and Mary were living in Sharon Township in Fayette County, Illinois. Philander was renting his home and was on a pension.

He was 89 years old when he died.
