  4. It's largely informed speculation that Nehemiah Smith and Olive Bailey were divorced. In the 1856 Iowa Census, Olive is listed as widowed, even though her husband wasn't dead. It seems that she's been living in Iowa for a year with her son. The next year, 1857, Nehemiah Dodge Smith marries Parthena Moore Elliott Steele, which he shouldn't be doing if he's still married. In 1860 Olive and Nehemiah (and Parthena) are both living in Chickasaw County, Iowa (nearby, but in different households). The most reasonable explanation for this is that they were divorced (possibly before, possibly after Olive moved to Iowa) and that documentation doesn't exist or hasn't been found.
