S.E. Ohio Swaims - found at Westcoat Library, McArthur, Ohio, probably written by Joe Mullane or Sam Hancock:

"A large group of the Swaim family have lived in Athens Co., Ohio, and the surrounding area since 1809. This family group was completely left out of the Swaim Tysen family history. Descendants of this family have been told that their ancestors went from New Jersey to North Carolina to Ohio by way of Kentucky. In the home built by John Milton Swaim, Sr., in New Mansfield, Ohio are a bed and a bench that the family have been told was brought from NC to Ohio by the original Athens Co. settlers.

Moses Swaim was born in Guilford Co., NC in the 1760-1765 likely time frame. He is no doubt the son of Michael (1715) and Marthey Swaim. There were no other Swaims in Guilford County, NC for him to have been their son. Moses had known brothers of William, John, Michael and likely Alexander. These are the only children that have ever been established for Michael and Marthey.

It is almost certain there are still missing children. Moses Swaim married in Guilford Co. NC around 1785, wife unknown, and had a son Michael Swaim, b. 03 Dec 1788. There have been records found that Michael was born in Salisbury district, Guilford Co., NC. He had a daughter, Sarah, who could have been born in 1786 or 1790-96. This daughter married Charles Camil in Athens Co. on 29 Nov 1811.

Moses and his family left Guilford County, NC before the 1790 Census and after the birth of Michael. This would establish 1789 as the year of departure, whether his first wife was still living at this time is unknown. He next appears in Montgomery Co., KY in 1794 paying taxes on his livestock and ______. In 1796 John Swaim and Alexander Swaim are in the Montgomery Co., KY tax list. At the same time there are Matthias Swaim (1712) living in ________ Co., KY. John, Alexander and Moses stayed together in KY until 1808, when Moses disappears from the tax list. In Sep 1796 Moses receives a marriage license to marry Caty Berry in Clarke Co., KY. This record has shown up in several places. Nancy Armstrong received a copy of the record from Clarke Co."
