  1. The births of all the children are recorded in both Groton and Shirley. Per Shirley VRs, p. 3, "The town of Shirley, Middlesex county, was established as a district January 5, 1753, from a part of Groton." Thus, it is assumed all the births occurred in what was then Groton, but what became Shirley. However, all the Shirley records are taken from the Bolton Record, compiled by Edith Stanwood (Mrs. Charles Knowles) Bolton, which was compiled from a variety of sources not specifically indicated. We cannot tell if she was using a family Bible, or even, copying from the Groton records and attributing them to Shirley based on her knowledge of where this family lived. Thus we have no way to judge the reliability of her source. In those few cases where there are differences, usually only the day of the month, precedence must be given to the Groton records, since they come from a known source (the records kept by the town clerk) and probably were the most contemporary to the event itself.
