Questionable Information Found
It is believed that the identification of wife as Elizabeth Bond is due to misreading Savage. See note 1.

  1. The basis for the marriage location and maiden name of the wife is unknown. No source giving Elizabeth Bond as wife of Joseph Underwood has been found, including Henry Bond who would be expected to be pretty familiar with the Bond family.

This appears to possibly be an error arising from misreading Savage 4:359. Savage erroneously gives Joseph a second wife Mary (discussed next note). So then he says, "his wid. Elizabeth Bond says, tho. he had not ment. 3d w", which may be why people think the name is Elizabeth Bond. What it appears to be actually trying to say is that Bond (as in Henry) says his widow is Elizabeth, but Bond (as in Henry) had not mentioned three wives.
  2. Savage gives Joseph a second wife Mary, saying "by w. Mary had Sarah 9 May 1687; and Hannah, bapt. 13 Apr. 1690". But his first wife is Elizabeth, his widow is Elizabeth and there is no record of any such marriage. In fact, on 5 Dec 1686 Joseph Underwood is admitted to the church, and on 27 Mar 1687 Elizabeth Underwood is, making it implausible that Joseph had a child by a different wife Mary 11 months later, and then remarried again, in time to have a widow Elizabeth 4 years after that.

However, the Watertown records do say "Sary Underwood daughter of Joseph & Mary borne the 9th of February [1687, presumably 1687/88]" (the date and given name confirmed by church records that say "Sarah" was baptized 12 Feb 1687/88). So Savage was probably going by the birth records, though by all appearances, the record simply gave the wrong name for the mother, perhaps the town clerk getting confused with Joseph's brother Thomas Underwood whose wife was named Mary in the births of his children (e.g. here).

The Underwood article in NEHGR Vol. 38, p. 402 is confused by all this, but makes the matter worse by relying on Bond's abstract of the will, which claims the will of Joseph Underwood names "drs. Mary, Hannah, and Elizabeth". So this article replaces Sarah with a daughter named Mary, reporting her birth as "9 May, 1687", apparently a typo for the correct 9 Feb 1687? The will actually names daughters "elisabeth", "sarah" and "hanna", i.e., matching the records found, and in their proper birth order as well [Middlesex Probate 23157].
