- ↑ Source:Benedict, William Addison. History of the Town of Sutton, Massachusetts, from 1704 to 1876, p. 671, who apparently looked only at Sutton records, appears to have been influenced by the "s. John" in the Sutton copy of the marriage record to identify Jonathan as the man b. 1674. This creates a somewhat implausible situation where a man age 52 married a woman 30 years his junior and starts having children, the last one when he is 64.
The Jonathan b. 1674 apparently bought land in Sutton in 1715.
Studying Salem records, one finds that a Jonathan King died in 1719 leaving several children, including his eldest son Jonathan, who was just about the same age as Alice Verry. But this son would not be the "s. John", he would be "s. Jonathan". So which one married Alice Verry: the father as indicated in the marriage record, or the son as seems reasonable?
No death record for the man who died in 1719, nor for Alice's husband have been found, so there is no age at death to help us. The knowledge of their deaths is based on the probate files only. The parents of neither man is identified there.
Two deeds end up solving the problem, both cited on the father Jonathan's page.
First in 1719, the real estate of William King is distributed. One quarter share goes the heirs of his brother John King deceased, namely 1/16 share to Samuel, William, John and Jonathan. John and Jonathan are both deceased, so their share goes to their children, both sets of children being named. This tells us that John's son Jonathan who was b. 1674 was deceased by 1719 and could not have married Alice Verry, and John's son John had no son named Jonathan, so there is no Jonathan s/o John.
Only Jonathan deceased had a son Jonathan. The Salem probate tells us he was over 14 in 1719 so born before 1705, so a good match for Alice Verry b. 1704.
The other children named as heirs of Jonathan deceased match the children for whom a guardian is appointed in Salem in 1719 (William, John, Sarah, Abigail, Lydia, Ruth). In 1741, all, except John, convey land in Sutton to their brother Jonathan of Sutton, showing that Jonathan King of Sutton was the son of Jonathan King of Salem who d. 1719.
Alice Verry's husband was not the son of John, rather the grandson of John and son of Jonathan.
