The family name was often recorded by record-keepers as "Winslow", but was not the same, which can be confusing. For example, Source:Anderson, Robert Charles. Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, p. 5:334, says Elizabeth Paddy "m. by 1664 John Wensley (eldest known child b. Boston 18 April 1664 [BVR 94])", and when you check Source:Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States. Births, Baptisms, Marriages, and Deaths, 1630-1699 (A Report of the Record Commissioners), p. 94, one finds: "Richard of Mr John & Eliza. Winslow born Apr. 18". And if one wasn't aware of this tendency, one might not recognize [in Anderson, p. 5:332] that the "John Winslow" who was guardian of Thomas Paddy was his uncle. But it was a distinct and different surname. For example, in the will of John Winslow, the overseer that is named is friend "Mr John Winsley" (Source:MD, p. 3:132). One would certainly think that Mr. Winslow would have been sensitive to whether their two surnames were the same or different.
