John Preston b 1 May 1685 Andover, Essex, Massachusetts d 26 Jul 1733 Windham, Connecticut bur, Hampton Ct. m. Andover 10 Jan 1706-7 Mary Haines, d/o Jonathan Haines, b. 3 Mar 1687, date of death unknown. By a deed recorded in Haverhill it is proved that Mary married John Preston of Andover and removed to CT. She was living in Windham 12 Oct 1730 per a signature on a deed.

[This is a very large age mismatch for this period and hard to explain away. John would have been seven years older than Mary. There was also a birth record for Mary Haynes which is a better match in age: Haverhill VR 1:151 Births: "Haines: Mary, d. Jonathan and Sarah (Moulton), Mar. 3, 1686-7" In 1995 in NEHGR 109:162 Hugh Grant Rowell proposed that this birth record was actually for Margaret without giving justification for this mental gymnastics. In the first case we have a birth record for "Mary" who is the correct age to be the wife to John Preston and who is clearly and heir to Jonathan Haynes and a missing birth record for Margaret Haynes. In the second case the author proposes we have a birth record for Margaret who happens to be called Mary in the record and not Margaret who is the correct age but it leaves a terrible mismatch in the age of Mary Haynes and her husband John Prescott. Why it is preferable to assume the child born as "Mary" was actually Margaret instead of the birth record not being recorded for Margaret is not explained by the author. Missing birth records in New England are very common. Age mismatches are not.]
