Marriage Bond[1] 20 Oct 1779 Duplin, North Carolina, United States

There are two marriage bonds for this couple on file at the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh, which I will refer to as marriage bonds "1" and "2," respectively. Marriage bond "1" was for the marriage of John Magee "Senr." to Ann Magee. Marriage bond "2" also reads John Magee "Senr." to Ann Magee, but the "Senr." is scratched through and "Junr." written in above. While it is not clear from the images uploaded here, an inspection of the original marriage bonds shows that the "Junr." was written in the same ink as that of the signatures to the bond. The text of the bond was made out before the signatures were affixed. When the bond was signed, either Thomas Page wrote in "Junr." (Solomon Magee signed with a mark), or one of the parties present notified the Clerk of the error, and the Clerk wrote in "Junr."

The Ann Magee in this bond appears to have been the daughter of Solomon Magee. She does not appear to be the daughter of William and Ann Moore Magee, since we can account for their children (see under the William Magee/Ann Moore page). As such, John and Ann were first cousins.

It is very difficult to determine whether this couple had any children. I have estimated the births of John Magee's children beginning several years after the date of this marriage. At the present time, I am "keeping" all of John's children with his second wife Bethany Scott, but it is entirely possible that this position could be modified with the location of additional evidence.
