Lydia's first husband, John James, was mortally wounded by an arrow in the defense of a blockhouse during King Phillip's war. The blockhouse was located near his farm on the North River in what is now Norwell MA. Lydia was left with a one year old son (John Jr.) and soon was remarried to William Barrell.
