John Dingwall, lived in the army town of Strelitz, near Cargill, Perthshire. Oral history states that he married Barbara McKenzie but no link can be found to this marriage except a child's death certificate and that he was a drum major.

Known children to John (only person mentioned on the Cargill's Old Parish Register) are as follows:

Elspeth 1799 John 1801 Alexander 1803 Daniel 1804 Daniel 1805

In 1810 the town was dispersed and the family moved on to pastures unknown.

The 1851 census revealed Alexander born Cargill, Perthshire living at 23 Rutherglen Court with family Helen aged 46 wife, born Old Monkland Lanarkshire and Barbara dau 18 born Lanarkshire, Glasgow.

Barbara's baptism was found as was her sister Agness. Barbara baptised 12.2.1832 at the Relief Church Hutcheson Glasgow Agness baptised 30.12.1827 born 1825 at the Relief Church Hutcheson Glasgow. Parents Alexander Dingwall and Mary Flimester/Firmister.

Marriage of Alexander and Mary were found 25.2.1826, Gorbals Lanark. (IGI)

Mary must have died for on the 17.9.1832 Alexander Dingwall married Jean Smith at Gorbals. The following children were born: Thomas Smith 1.9.1833 at Gorbals & James 30.7.1835 at Gorbals.

Again reverting to the 1851 census Thomas Smith Dingwall and James Dingwall are no longer in sight.

Jean must have died for on the 21.2.1837 Alexander married Helen Gilchrist at Gorbals Lanarkshire. The following Children were located: Helen born 4.7.1839 at Gorbals Margaret born 12.4.1841 Gorbals Alexander Gilchrist 27.7.1844 at Gorbals

Again the 1851 census is a mystery as Helen, Margaret and Alexander are also not acknowledged.

1861 census. Helen Dingwall snr now a widow aged 57 was living in the Village of Langloan, Old Monkland on Gilchrist's land with daughter Helen aged 21 a teacher and Alexander Gilchrist Dingwall aged 16 a brassfounder.

Barbara Dingwall married Robert Snedden shortly after the 1851 census was conducted i.e. 30.11.1851.

As to Alexander's siblings, John Dingwall jnr married 1. Mary Dinwoodie 2. Isabella Calder or Caldwell. John and Isabella with Mary's two children Mary and John, were bounty Immigrants arriving in Australia on board the "Duncan" in 1839. John then married 3. Charlotte King and 4. Mary Kell Tate - Anderson. He died in 1887 in Sydney.

Daniel Dingwall married Margaret Brown Devine, and they too migrated as bounty Immigrants with their children to Australia in 1841 on board the "New York Packet".Daniel died in 1855.

John Dingwalls are noted in the PRO WO records, but unfortunately there is no personal detail which can identify either of them to our family.
