  1. Drummond, Josiah H. "John Bray of Kittery", in The Maine historical and genealogical recorder. (Portland, Maine: S.M. Watson)
    3:253-4.

Rules out assertions that John Bray had more than one wife. Wife Jane is probably confusion of name Jane and Joan, and Margaret Lambert married a different John Bray, of Gloucester. As to identity of widow Joan, presumed thus to be John's only wife, that her maiden name is Pearce is based on York Probate Records, p. 1:40, calling "Macam Mackatiere and John Braey Sons in Law to John Pearce Late of York". However, as this document is dated 7 Apr 1697 [several sources give this date as 7 Apr 1699, e.g., ibid, 2:260], seven years after John died, it could not refer to this John Bray (in a followup article, ibid, p. 4:26, Drummond argues this deed referred to John Bracy), so the maiden name of his wife remains unknown.

  2. The estimated marriage date is just a guess, based on third child Margery b. 1660, according to various sources. However, if some children d. young, it could be earlier. John Bray was of Plymouth, England and came to New England shortly bef. 1660 when he built a house in Kittery.
