Their niece Stephany shared some of her favorite memories visiting "Aunt Mabel and Uncle John." They lived on a farm in Hawthorne, California, and Stephany loved to visit them. She remembers her first ever horseback ride, on their farm, which led to her lifelong addiction to horses. They also had a beautiful and smart Collie named "Goldie" that was a wonderful dog. They had a large tortoise, they drilled a hole in the tail-end of its shell and chained him in the backyard as a pet.

Stephany loved sitting next to Aunt Mabel on the back porch on laundry day, while Mabel washed the sheets with her wringer washer and then hung them out to dry. Then Stephany would run through the clean sheets hanging on the line.
