The original town of Lyme was set off from Saybrook in 1655 and initially called East Saybrook; renamed Lyme in 1657. In 1819, Salem was incorporated from parts of Colchester, Lyme and Montville. In 1839 East Lyme was incorporated from parts of Waterford and Lyme. The remainder was split, in 1855, into South Lyme and Lyme. South Lyme was renamed Old Lyme in 1857.
