With respect to the identities of the children of Jacob Magee and Mary Scott, we are very lucky to have a transcript of a letter written by Felix W. Magee, grandson of Jacob and Mary, in which he identified the children of his grandparents and gave a great deal of additional information of exceptional value. While some of the contents of this letter apply to the Dickson and Allen families, I feel that those passages are worth including here, as well. A few more words are in order regarding the provenance of this letter. Though the physical location of the letter is unkown to me, Mrs. Marie Upton obtained a copy in the 1950's and published it twice...once in her genealogy The Ginns and Their Kin, and also in the 14 June 1955 issue of the Hammond, Louisiana Newspaper The Hammond Sun. Mrs. Upton’s note to the editor reads “Gentlemen, I am enclosing copy of a letter written in 1896 by Felix W. Magee Sr. to his son...the first two pages of the original letter have been located by a Mrs. Grabein and the occupant of the old colonial home of former Lieut. Governor Dickson in Grimes Co., TX. The two pages of the original letter show that it was written in pencil and is badly mutilated. Comparing these two pages with the typed copy indicates that the original letter perhaps consisted of about six pages.” ------- Alto Falls, Grimes County, Texas, October 26, 1896 Felix W. Magee Jr., Cawthon Grimes County, Texas My dear son: I send you the family record of my father Daniel Magee and my mother Sally (Allen) Magee and your grandfather William Dickson and Harriet (Catchings) Dickson, and my grandfather Gabriel Allen and wife Annie McKinney, Jacob Magee and wife Mary Scott, my grandfather and mother, and Gen. David Dickson (his first wife’s name unknown to me). By his [David Dickson’s] first wife he had two sons, William Hugh and Mike. William Hugh moved to Denton Co., Texas about 1850. He had a son in Denton Co., Texas, I believe named Columbus. William Hugh died many years ago. His son died several years ago. Mike settled at Pen Level, Alabama many years ago, left a large family. I learn this from Ex-Governor William H. Smith of Alabama, son of Mrs. Nancy Smith, your mother’s Aunt at Milner, Alabama. She was living in 1894 aged 94 years. She has a son living near her named A. J. Smith. Gen. Dickson by his second wife Martha Cureton had sons David H., James Cureton, and William. All three settled near Holmesville, then Mississippi Territory, about 1814. David H. Dickson moved to Jackson, Mississippi some time between 1820 and 1830...had a large family of children, names Martha, Julia, Thomas, Mary, and another son. David H. Dickson, their father, was a member of Congress from Mississippi in 1836. Died at Hot Springs, Arkansas. David Hugh Dickson came to Texas in 1836, was a Capt. in Gen. John Quitman’s Regt. Of Mississippi volunteers in the Texas Revolution. James C. Dickson moved to Jackson, Mississippi about the time his brother David H. did. His wife was Miss Jones, by her he had three children, David, Jones, and Martha Cureton. Jones Dickson married Daniel Fore’s [?] daughter sometime in the ‘40's. Martha C. Dickson married a Mr. Miller in Jackson, Mississippi about 1840. I believe that Miller was a brother of Upton Miller, Treasurer of Mississippi about that time. James C. Dickson was Commissioner of the Land Office at Jackson, Mississippi at one time. Gen. Dickson had seven children by his third wife: Thornton, Mathew, McConel, Charles A., John O., and Robert D. [seventh child apparently not named]. Mathew M. died in Kaufman County, Texas, at what point I am not informed. John O. died in Indian Territory. Robert D. died about three years ago in Fayette Co., Georgia. Charles A. died in Kaufman Co., TX. Robert D. Dickson’s wife was named Marthema, and was living when her husband died. Her post Office is Fayetteville, Georgia. This from Mrs. Nancy Smith, Milner, Alabama. My Grandfather, Jacob Magee, your great-grandfather, and Mary Scott came from South Carolina and were one of the first settlers of Sampson County, NC; moved from there to Alabama and settled near Ft. St. Stevens. Moved from there to Mississippi Territory and settled on Amite River about the year 1810. Judging from the ages of their children, my grandfather and mother Jacob Magee and Mary Scott were born before 1760, and had twelve children: Henry, Bethany, Nehemiah, Daniel, John, Fleet, Ervin, Penina, Mary, Sally, Jane, and Elizabeth. Elizabeth Married Barnabas Allen and they had two children, Elbert and Angelina. Henry married Nannie Magee and they had three children, Chapman, Haverson, and Missant. Bethany married Isaac Fortenberry, some of their children’s names William, John, Ervin, Barbara, and others whose names I have forgotten. Nehemiah married Martha Smith and had 5 children, Jacob, Phillip, Annie, Elizabeth, and Charles. Daniel married Sally Allen and had 6 children, Ervin Allen, Felix Winchester, Sophronia Leland, Nancy Ann, Elizabeth, Henry Colan. John married Carrie Magee and had several children, only remember one of their names, Lenford. By his [John’s] second wife, John, Ervin, and others. Mary married a Johnson, several children, Daniel and James only ones I remember. Fleet married Rebecca Pigott and had 6 children, Leonard, Fleet, Mary, Elizabeth, William, and Jacob. Leonard was a lawyer, William and Jacob were doctors. Ervin died age 21. Penina Married Jeptha Gin, had 8 children: one girl married a Mr. Miller, another one married Ben Magee, another one married Siah Magee, Hugh Gin married a Miss Smith, Sebastian Gin married Missant Magee, Harriet married Haverson Magee, Eveline, Bethany, Eliza. Jane Magee married Andrew Winborn and had nine children, Alice (married John Wood), Caroline (married Solomon Greer), David (married Miss Elizabeth Moore), Cynthia Ann (married James C. Moore), Mary Gin (blurred), Jane (married a Mr. Hunter), Permacy (married John Lane), Cassandry (married Bron Stephens), Addison (married a Miss Winborn his 2nd wife’s name not known to me). Sally Magee married John Magee, not related, their children were Jacob and others. Gabriel Allen and wife Annie McKinney, my grandparents, moved to Tenn., settled on Cumberland River. I am informed they moved from Tennessee to Mississippi Territory about the year 1812 and settled near Holmesville, Mississippi. Judging from the ages of their children, they must have been born about 1775. They had 8 children: George, Felix, Barnabas, Garrett, Mary, Elizabeth Esther, and Sally. George married a Miss Sugg, had 4 children, James, Barnabas, John, Elizabeth, and others. Felix married a Miss Williams, had 3 children, Christine, and two sisters. Elizabeth married Cornelious McGraw and had 2 children, Annie and Nancy. Barnabas Allen married Elizabeth Magee, had 2 children Elbert and Angeline. George Allen married Sally Barksdale, children Elmore, Benton, Nancy, and others. Garrett married Malsy Gatlin, had children Sophia. Esther Ellen married Henry Raglin, their children Sally, Mary, Eliza, and Henry Walton Raglin. Sally married Dr. Charles W. Harris, children Emily, Eveline, Charles, and others. Mary married Dr. Wiley P. Harris, children named Amanthia, Bingamon, Robert, and others. Eliza married Dr. Eagon and had one children. Henry W. Raglin married Anna Jane Magee, children named Henry, Esther, Elizabeth, and Josie. Elizabeth Allen married Dr. Pearson, they settled in Bastrop County, TX about 1840, had a son living in Bastrop in 1874. My father had two uncles living in southeast Mississippi when it was a territory. Their names were Phillip and Soloman. Fleet, John, William, and Joseph Magee were my father’s cousins. I had information their mother’s maiden name was Scott, a sister to my grandmother Magee. They lived near Monticello, Lawrence County, MS, in 1830. Parks, ond of the early settlers of Waco, TX, was a relation of my father. My uncle Barnabas Allen informed me in 1842 that Pat and Bill Jack that took such an active part in early days of the Republic of Texas were relatives of ours. The McKinneys of Galveston, Texas in early days of the Republic were relatives of my Allen connection. F. W. Magee, Sr. To F. W.
