Hi Paul,

Here is some information for you....Start printing....

The name Kollock was originally Colloque. The Colloque's were French Huguenots believed to have lived in the south of France. Under religous persecution they fled to Holland. At some point while in Holland they changed the name to Kollock.

Jacob Kollock was born in Holland in 1657. He immigrated to America year unknown and settled in Lewes,Sussex,DE. He married Mary Phillips whom was born in Lewes in 1659. Jacob and Mary were married about 1679 in Lewes. Both the parents of Jacob & Mary are unknown. One source lists Mary's surname as being Lawerson, but most list her as Phillips so we go with Phillips.

Jacob died on February 25 in either 1719 or 1720. He is buried in the churchyard at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Lewes. He is listed as being one of the earliest burials in this cemetery. Mary died on September 30, 1741 in Lewes and is also burried in St Peter's Episcopal churchyard.

Jacob & Mary Kollock had 7 children. All of whom were born in Lewes, Sussex,DE

Simon b.1680; m. Comfort Shepherd about 1705. Comfort's maiden name is believed to be the source of the name Shepard that is used repeatedly in this family. Most of us, myself included descend through this line. More information is available on this line if desired.
Hannah b. 1682; m. to the Rev. Wrixham White. They had 4 children - Ambrose b. 1706; Jacob b. 1706; Mary b. 1708; Comfort b. 1710. Wrixham White died around 1720 and Hannah married Corneilus Wiltbank b.1660-1665 there are conflicting sources as to his place of birth. It is listed as both Lewes and the Netherlands. Helmanus Fredrick Wiltbank and Jane Jonakin are listed as his parents. Corneilus and Hannah had only one child that I know of Isaac b. February 7, 1920/21 (he married a woman named Mary, name unknown). They had 6 children Sarah b. 1744; Margaret b. 1745; Corneilus b. 1747; Mary b.

1751; Hannah b. 1753; Samuel b. 1754; Lydia b. 1764. Hannah Kollock died in Lewes in May of 1747. Corneilus Wiltbank died on April 1, 1724 in Lewes. Corneilus was also married prior to his marriage to Hannah. I do not have her name in my notes. It is available at the LDS site though, as I have seen it there. So I am sure he had other children with her.

   Jane b. 1684;  m. William Irons Magdalen b. 1686;  m. Joseph Royal Hester b. 1688;  m. Jacob Phillips Corneilus b. 1690;
   Magdelen b. 1686; m. Joseph Royal
   Hester b. 1688; m. Jacob Phillips
   Corneilus b. 1690
Jacob b. 1692, m. Hannah Alice Shepherd. More information available on this line if desired.

The information here has come from a variety of sources. Some of which are from the LDS site. Unfortunately the LDS site has quite a bit of innacurate information. Most of what is innacurate there is not the names, it is the locations and dates. I can tell you that you can be sure on the location as Lewes, but some of the dates may be off by a few years. The LDS site is a good place to gather information and then as you research make corrections to errors you come across.

An interestiong point is that Wrixham Whites Family were also related through marriage to the Wiltbanks. Hannah was also not the only Kollock to marry a Wiltbank. I met a man online last week whom is a descendant of both the Wiltbank & the White Lines. His name is Jim Kirby I will dig through the 200 pounds of paperwork on my desk & find his e-mail. He is a very nice man whom is part of a huge genealogy web ring called the Del Mar Genealogy project. He would be more than happy to assist you on any other information you might need. If you have any questions or need help finding any specific information ask away. I will help you in any way I can.

The Kollock Family Legend

Jacob Kollock was born circa 1657. His place of birth is believed to have been somewhere in Southern France. The family legend handed down through generations of Kollock family members is that the Kollock's were French Huguenots whose surname was originally spelled Colloque. The Edict of Nantes gave the people of France religous freedom. In October of 1685 the Edict of Nantes was revoked and many of the Huguenots fled to avoid religous persecution. Family legend continues that Jacob fled to Holland and it is at this time that the spelling of the surname was changed from Colloque to Kollock. The pronunciation of the name remained the same and the new spelling reflected a German/Dutch spelling of the name. After being in Holland for an undetermined amount of time Jacob set sail for America. The year was approximately 1688 when Jacob Kollock appeared and settled in Lewes, Sussex County, Delaware. Lewes would be Jacob's home for the remainder of his life and the birthplace of the next Kollock generations to come.

Jacob's Story

Jacob was known as a Merchant in Lewes. He became a prominent figure in Sussex County. He acquired considerable property in Lewes and was very active in the community and the local government. Jacob married Mary Lawerson. There has been some debate over the wife of Jacob Kollock. A link has been added here to read the information on the matter of Jacob's wife
Jacob and Mary Kollock had seven children. They were: Simon Kollock, Hannah Kollock, Jacob Kollock, Jane Kollock, Magdalene Kollock, Hester Kollock, and Cornelius Kollock. Unfortunately there has been no recorded documentation of their births. Jacob Kollock, did however list his son Simon Kollock as his eldest child on a legal document. Jacob's son Jacob Kollock, Jr., has a headstone on his grave that includes his birth and death years. Otherwise, the birth order is accepted in the order that these children were listed on various legal documents by Jacob and Mary Kollock. Jacob Kollock died at the age of 63 on February 25, 1720. Mary Kollock died at the age of 95 on September 30, 1741. They are both buried in St. Peters' Old Episcopal Churchyard in Lewes.

Children of Jacob and Mary Kollock:

       1. Simon Kollock, b. about 1688
       2. Hannah Kollock, b. about 1690
       3. Jacob Kollock, b. 1692
        4. Jane Kollock, b. about 1694
       5. Magdalene Kollock, b. about 1696
       6. Hester Kollock, b. about 1698
        7. Cornelius Kollock, b. about 1700

Mary Kollock, wife of Jacob:

From the begining of my research of the Kollock family every item I saw noted Mary Phillips as the wife of Jacob Kollock. The LDS (www.familysearch.com) has Mary Phillips, b. about 1659, listed as Jacob's wife. The autors of works on the Kollock family *(Edwin Jaquette Sellers, J. Bennet Hill, and Richard W. Cook) all list Mary, wife of Jacob's maiden name as unknown. A fellow Kollock researcher had Mary Lawerson listed as the wife of Jacob. I inquired as to where he had received that information and he told me it had been given to him by a researcher who found it on some old Lewes, Delaware legal records. My next step was to find those records and to find out where the name Mary Phillips had come from. All leads to the belief that Mary Phillips was indeed the wife of Jacob Kollock led back to entries at the LDS site. Fellow researcher (Patricia Kollock-Middaugh) informed me that she had gone to the LDS in Salt Lake City, Utah. The record she was given of the name Mary Phillips was submitted by a woman sometime during the 1970's. So it came to be that a personal submission at the LDS turned into the belief of many that Mary Phillips was the wife of Jacob Kollock.

A fellow Lewes, Delaware researcher (D. Mitchell Jones) then provided me with a copy of the legal records that contained the information concerning Mary Lawerson as the wife of Jacob Kollock. Those records are rather curious, but they do confirm that Mary Lawerson was indeed the wife of Jacob Kollock.

Sussex County Probate Records:

p.783-2-3 June 1691 Jacob Colloke was the last Court presented by the Grand Jury on Suspistion of not being married unto Mary Lawerson according to the Laws of Government.

p. 793-1-2 Sept 1691 Jacob Colloke was the last fierst month Court found presentable by the Grand Jury on suspicion of not being Marryed unto Mary Lawerson according to Law.

p.803-2-4 December 1691 Jacob Colloke was the last fourth month Court presented by the Grand Jury of not being Marryed unto Mary Lawerson according to Law.

Explanation:

When I first saw these records I was not sure what to make of them. So I consulted with some experts on old legal documents. It was explained to me that these records clearly show that Mary Lawerson was the wife of Jacob Kollock. Here is why....
Jacob Kollock and Mary Lawerson were in court 3 times being questioned about the leaglity of their marriage. No charges were ever filed against them and so there was no verdict on this matter in the record books. This shows that they were able to prove they were legally married and the case was dismissed.
