It appears that he and Elizabeth didn't stay married long. By 1860 she shows up in the census as living with her parents (and 2-year-old son, Howard).

George may have entered the Army during the Civil War (there is a George McNichols who enlisted from, I think, Wheeling, WV--can't find that information right now--I must get organized).

By 1870, George shows up in Dexter, Dallas County, Iowa in the census. Also living in Dexter at that time was Thomas McNichols (George's brother) whose wife was Ruth Kinney (Elizabeth and Nathan's sister). There is mention of them in the History of Dallas County Iowa online:
