The Charleton's (Cherleton) are believed descended from Sir John de Cherleton, Knt., of Powis, 1st Lord Cherleton, Chamberlain to King Edward II. He was Justiciar of Ireland. he married Hawise (nicknamed 'Gadarn', i.e., the Hardy), Lady of Powis suo jure, daughter of Owain ap Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn (otherwise, de la Pole). Owen (Owain ap Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn) de la Pole was son Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn and was heir presumptive to the Welch principality of Powys Wenwynwyn until 1283 when it was abolished by the Parliament of Shrewsbury. He became the 1st Lord of Powis after the death of his father in c. 1287. He is recorded in Welch history as being a descendent of Rhodri the Great as well as a descendent of Roman Western Emperor Flavius Magnus Maximus Augustus (Magnus Maximus) through his daughter Sevira's marriage to High King of Britons, Vortigern (a.k.a. Gwrtheyrn).
