NB Sarah was born in Bristol in 1837 and a Thomas Gordge and family were ordered to be removed from St Augustine, Bristol in 1843

In 1891 there were 3 families of Hopkins next door.

In 1891 a Mary Ackerman age 15 born Worcs was living with them as a servant. Mary was also with Digory and Eliza in 1901, working as a shop assistant.

There are no Mary Ackermans in FreeBMD born in Worcester 1870-1880 so I am assuming she was the one who lived in Worcester age 5 in 1881. (Though she was 'Mary Anne' in 1881) Her mother was also Mary Ackerman who had 2 children but was unmarried (1881) and was born Fulham. :

Mary Ackerman, boarder, in house of George Sparks, widower and his son, both born Yeovil, which is where Mary's 2 children Mary Anne age 5 and Afred George age 11 months were born.

This suggests some sort of relationship between them. Mary's children are down as son and daughter, though whether of George or Mary is not clear. One son Alfred George has George Spark's name as 2nd name but Alfred, the name of Alfred Burston who seemed to 'adopt' him, as first name. In 1891 Alfred George Ackerman is with Alfred Burston, his wife and children as 'son' but keeping Ackerman as surname, though in 1901 he is Alfred Burston.

In 1881 'Choice' Gordge age 6 is with Digory & Eliza as a grandaughter, born Swansea. She is the Elizabeth Joyce Gordge on their grave stone. She died 19 Oct 1888 age 14. She was born 14 Sep 1874 at Raven Hill, Swansea, the daughter of Mary and registered as Elizabeth Cloice Ickerman, the daughter of Mary Ickerman ie Ackerman. (I have the certificate). I do not know who this Mary Ackerman is.

This could be related to the rumour of there being a Ward in Chancery. Chancery Court records are at the PRO, they date from the late C14 and are in English. Chancery cases were often disputes between members of the same family [over land, trusts, marriage settlements or wills] . The Court's records therefore contain a large amount of genealogical information. The surviving records are enormous, searching them is a complex operation. The book "Ancestral Trails " by Mark Herber has a comprehensive section on the subject.
