Daniel and Francelia were both born in New York. Not much is known of Daniels life. Francelia was quite a bit younger then he was. She was nineteen and he was thirty-two when their first daughter Helen was born. It’s not known when they married. The girls were all born in Illinois. Records from daughter Olive indicate that they lived in Rock Island, Illinois.

Daniel listed his occupation as a News Agent. This may have entailed some moving around. In 1870, two years after third daughter Hattie is born the family is in Wyandotte, Kansas. Daniel is not listed in the census record. Three years later youngest child, son Fredrick is born in Missouri. They are in St. Louis in the 1880 census so that was probably where Fredrick was born.

The next record is the 1900 census and Francelia is a widow. Daniel must have died some time between 1880 and 1900. The family suffered in the intervening years. Francelia lists that she had four children and two are living. Since Francelia is living with daughter Helen and daughter Olive is known to be alive in 1900 that means that both Hattie and Fredrick must have died. Helen is 42 in 1910. Living alone with her mother isn’t probably the life trajectory she would have wished for.

However, there is happier news a few lines down the census record. Newly married granddaughter Lillie Parke is living down the street with her husband Charles Butt. There is a wonderful photo in the following photo section that shows Francelia standing with daughter Olive, granddaughter Lillie, and great-grandson Art.

Francelia appears in another photo in 1923 when she is nearly 80. It is not known when she died.
